Up until I downloaded the most recent version, the game was running great. Now, after installing and trying to play a game through I can neither resume or start a new game: I get to the 37% mark (on either reloading or starting a new map) and immediately leave completely out of the game back to the desktop. I don't think this is a system problem but I can't honestly say. - Polaris

Here's what confuses me about Trade Goods though: Can you sell them only once or do you have a chance to sell them to every Civilization you come across? And once you sell it, you DO lose the effect it had on your own civ right?
Popup Target et al: Thanks for the advice and info - certainly given me some stuff to chew on for my next game. Just to clarify: 1) Do the starbases have a temporary effect or a stacking effect? Ie if my freighter starts out with 100 BC in materials in it, travels through one SB sector with a 10% boast and then another SB sector with a 10%, will my freighter finish its run with 121 BC in materials? Or am I misunderstanding how SBs work? 2) How do you det
When starting a game... 1) Do you manually pilot USS Hero or do you set it to Auto-survey? 2) Are ship-based techs worth the effort or should I be working on diplomacy or industry or trade-goods? 3) Do I want to be picky PQ wise with the planets I settle or should I just grab anything PQ 15 and over? 4) How do I figure out my research points per round? Thanks ya'll. ~SDC~
I'm a newbie player that's managed to get through about 3 or 4 games at very easy settings, but more to experiment then anything else. What have folks found to be good starting suggestions for getting out the gate quickly. Obviously, I want to take as many good yellow stars as possible but after that I'm rather stuck on what way to go. Should I be trying for some basic techs to extend starship range or should I worry about industry? Is it better to go military or social first? Etc etc. <br
Possibly a couple of foolish n00b questions but bear with me here: 1) After downloading the various mods and created events on the official website, where exactly do I need to put them? I've been looking for instructions and such but had no luck. 2) Is there any way to search for posts on the board made by a specific person? Or a keyword? Thanks ya'll. ~SDC~
Mr Pink 7: Ie he buys the good from a major civ and then trades it to a minor civ along the lines of "1 trade good for 50 coins over 10 months" sort of thing? ~SDC~
TNTTony said: "I use minor civs to grab all the trade goods. I basically lease all my trade goods and sell it back to them to offset the lease. In my current game I have most of the trade goods and because of them I am making tons of cash." How exactly does that work? Does he mean the minor civ makes the trade goods and he extorts them from the minor civ? Or he sells them to 'em? I've never been very clear on how best work trade goods into the game, except as a one-time cash
Two starting point questions: 1) When the game starts, are folks using the survey ship as a scout or to pick up anomoly bonuses? What are some thoughts on this? 2) What are some strategies for techs and how to trade them? I mean, how can I tell what another civilization is researching or needs or is getting too close to acquiring? Thanks ya'll. ~SDC~
Nicholas: Ah, thanks. That clears it up. Regarding Governors: so I have to pick a governor for every planet then? I assume there are 4 different governors so you can have 4 different build orders but are there any other differences between 'em? Thanks again. ~SDC~
Ya'll have been great so far - thanks to everyone who has helped out. Just a couple of quick ones here: 1) How the heck do you use governors? I tried selecting one and then setting up a build order but it seemed as though that was ignored. I still had to manually select every building on every planet I wanted put up. 2) Which numbers are income and which are production? Are they the same thing? If not, what's the difference? 3) What's the difference (in game
Hrm. Well my Star is actually a full "shell" now, and can actually move 1 square a round. It's not just a shell or a starbase with "pointy parts" ie Terror Shell-under-construction. I guess I'm asking if there's more to a Terror Star then building the full, moving Star. ~SDC~
I've created enough tech that I can now create TERROR STARS (insert Death Star or other appropriate music here) but one problem: my TERROR STARS can't attack. Is there additional tech (beyond what it takes to build the TS) that increases speed and gives it planet-attacking ability? If so, what tech is that? Thanks ya'll. ~SDC~
I've noticed that there are a number of things not mentioned in the manual, and while I've been able to find a lot of information reading these boards, I've still got a few question marks lurking. Hopefully someone can help clear them up: 1) In looking at buildings and monuments, how can I tell how far the influence of that item goes - that is, am I correct in understanding that something like the medical system (which has +5 star influence) affects only the planet or does it affect th
Two n00b questions: First, what does ctrl-r do in the game? I'm guessing that it just redoes the map but I haven't seen a thing about it in the manual. Secondly, in reference to resources: when you mine them via starbases, do they only affect things in that sector (like modules do) or does that affect your whole civilization? Thanks ya'll ~SDC~
Re starbases: I'm a bit confused here. Do Starbases have to be in every sector that the freighter goes through in order to get the bonus or in just one of them? I'm not even exactly sure if Starbases themselves are just sector-influencing or civilization influencing? Someone care to clear that up for me please... Danke. ~SDC~
During my stumbling and bumbling around the galciv.com site, I managed to find the downloadable events. I looked and couldn't find the answer, so can some kind soul let me know where I should be unzipping or placing the files once downloaded? Thanks... ~SDC~
Re influence: This may sound foolish, but how do I _lose_ influence in the galaxy? I'm a still a n00b in the game right now, and I'm playing on fairly low settings, checking out the buildings, trying to figure out strategies and researching as much as I can. Ultimately I end up winning via influence since I'm buildng stuff that puts me so far ahead of the competition. So I realize there's a difference between influence points (which seems to be a tradeable good that
So I know from reading the guide and stuff in here that the longer the trade route a freighter goes, the more money that's going to bring in. And I have a feint idea I probably want my ships to go between my big worlds (production wise) and theirs. I've even managed to figure out that I want to put up starbases with trade bonuses on likely routes. But what exactly do I need to do to have a successful trade set-up going on? Thanks ya'll. ~SDC~
Thanks for the answer - I'm not a total idiot, just a bit slow today! Yeah, that's the ticket... One more question for yah: what exactly are guard and sentry supposed to do? I know they trigger if another ship appears nearby but other then that, I can't exactly figure it out... ~SDC~
Silly question here, but how exactly do you "Auto-survey?" I'd love something like that for later in the game when I'd rather concentrate on other stuff. Also, is it just me or do new "goodies" randomly appear in the universe as old ones are "discovered?" ~SDC~
