When a fleet attacks, it's like you've given all your ships an attack order. From what I understand, your best ship will attack first, if it dies, the next one will continue, and so on down the line. There's no fleet bonus other than simplicity of movement.

First, as far as starting position. It's been a horror of 4x games as far as time goes back. A bad starting position in MOO2 could leave you dead to rights - a space monster in one system, nothing but gas giants; or worse, a white star with NO planets in the other).. same with civ, same with Empire for those who remember it. This game *IS* a bit worse as your colonization is very limited.. but it's not unrealistic when you look at real life - the nations that have become great have done so at le

Tribute from the dead. I got VERY lucky with my current game. Found a corvette first thing with my survey ship and then a couple quick +att/+def bonuses. I also was set up for +2 speed. Managed to kill the Altarian colony ships before they managed to expand at all - they were against the map edge, I was a few sectors inward from them. They finally sued for peace and I extorted 100BC for 50 months from them!!! This was on intelligent btw. Not thinking, I decide

And I don't think the problem is so much with it being silly.. as the huge advantage it gives the human player as he can now buy these 'pocket battleships' relatively cheaply and put them to effective use while the AI still considers them transports. ~SDC~

I agree that killing sensor drones makes sense, but what doesn't make sense is using a battleship to do it... it's overkill and, with a top speed of 5, it couldn't catch my sensor drone who's speed was 7.

Yeah, I was very surprised to see they were cheaper than battleships. It seems that there are a few very distinct 'eras' for combat. Starfighter/corvette/defender era. Frigate/Battelcruiser/Battleaxe/Battlehammer era. Battleship/Dreadnaught era. I guess there's likely a 4th era, but I haven't gotten far enough in tech to see it. By the time the Dreadnaught era arises, the ships from previous eras aren't very useful. Yes, Corvettes and frigates make very go

I feel that event is a little unbalanced, at that point, you stop building dreads and just build transports faster and for less maintainance. Might be better if it increased the defense of the transports - make them a bit harder to kill. Of course, then you just use them for defense. Perhaps the game needs to be coded so certain ships - like transports, don't count for defensive purposes when orbiting a planet. ~SDC~

Not sure if this is a known issue already, I did take a quick look in the bug report thread.. but 24 pages.. ugghh. I posted it there anyways. I built a starbase in a sector where the Altarians already had one that had the -1 move effect in place. My starbase was able to move 1 sqr/turn. I figure it's one of two things.. 1. zero movement minus one move = -1 move which converts into an integer somehow. 2. or more likely, it's because of the hardcoding minimum

Just built a starbase in a sector with an enemy starbase that had the -1 to enemy movement... my starbase could move one square per turn. I figure it's one of two things. 1. zero movement -1 = -1 movement which somehow gets integered into 1 movement. 2. more likely, the hardcoded... negative movement always leave opponents with a min. of 1 movement.

Yeah... I answered my own question in my game last night. Set spending to 100%. Taxes to the highest point where Earth was 100 Approval. I built 1 scout first - I find this helps with getting 2 extra turns of growth on Sol before you start cranking out colony ships. Then colony ships, with my military set to around 75-80% (a colony ship every 3 turns I think it was), the rest in research. I was playing a large map, all races set to intelligent. By the time I met 2 of

I'd like some answers to the starting population questions also. I've tried a few different things - and it always seems like I'm stuck dead last with pop... most of the time the Altarians have 3-4 times my pop - as far as the graph is concerned anyways.. Any help?

It's an amazing game.. and if you're a 4x nut like I am, be warned. You'll start playing on "Painful" - All AIs set to intelligent, which is the level at which the AI uses it's full AI abilities but doesn't get any bonuses (a level playing field with us humans) - and find out just how strong the AI is... ... it's a humbing experience for someone who's always felt they were good at 4x games... lol :notsure:

Actually, if the production cost was exactly the same as 2 or 3 constructors(and the buy cost at least that of 2 or 3) it would be better if the AI didn't use them. They'd make an effective human crutch though. The AI would be better off with the flexibility offered by 3 constructors, it doesn't suffer from the mad clicking to make them go. Also, the first constructor gets there, they first bonus kicks in, the second gets there, the second bonus kicks in, etc.. another advantage of sending them

Even just checking the closest two systems as possibilities.. and actually checking the defensive abilities conferred to them by starbases.. hmm, example is probably easier to explain. 1. AI checks two closest systems for 'Death by Starbase' (DbS = 2 or 3 fully equipped miliatary starbases) 2. If neither is a DbS system, it attacks one randomly in strength. 3. If one or both are DbS systems, it flags them as such and ignores them - and avoids them with pathing from then on.

I think you also have to be at peace with everyone. I checked my menu, it said 12mth under Cultural Victory. I then got greedy and attacked the Yor a couple months later.. about 2 years later - after I wiped out the Yor (it's was a small, beginner game) I THEN got a message that victory would be mine in years.. and I think it checks in June of each year. It wasn't right after I killed the Yor that I got the message. I seem to remember they bumped up the cultural victory time requiremen

in Alpha Centari, you could loan money to other players and them to you. If war was declared, the payments stopped... once the war was over, the payments then continued... perhaps that might work as an implementation. To stop the exploit of getting massive amounts of tech for tribute, then declaring war until the enemy is gone, perhaps tribute being paid by the one that declares war still gets paid. Maybe the UFP demands it... ~SDC~

perhaps they could add the number keys to fill colony ships and transports to a percent 1=10%,2=20%, etc. I'd like to see it.. but I'm anal about things and really have to fight to just send 121 million people somewhere instead of wasting time tweaking it to exactly 100 million. It's an annoying habit, but one I can't seem to break.. lol ~SDC~

Well, the 'it is crap' arguement could always be refuted with arguments used to defend a certain other space-strategy game out there..... **sarcasm starts* 1. "Give it a chance, try it for a week, it'll grow on you..." 2. "Wait for the patch" (oh.. wait.. the first patch for GalCiv is already out... :D 3. "(Insert Game Name Here) is totally revolutionary.... it's quite deep and complex.. some people just won't be able to think 'outside the box' enough to be a

Totally amazing. I just played my first game through all the way against beginners.. Cutural victory!!! Start working on an expansion and you'll be more than welcome to suck another $70 (Cdn) out of my pocket. I've got about 2 hours before I need to go to bed and I'm afraid to start another game.. because I'm sure I'D hear birds chirping because of the 'one more turn' syndrome.. or possibly the phone when my boss calls to find out where I am. :CONGRAT:
