"GRRM's comments in the clip allay my fears somewhat that it will be a radical departure from what the books are like." ... you mean, like, finished?

Heh. Just tried it, got run the hell over by wandering monsters on about turn ... 40?50? I had my farmer's market and a few halberdiers.Time to try a couple other things and see what else they changed. (I was crafting items for my hero...)
"Dominions skates by on like... 3 sprites per unit, though. Hehe." Two. If you've got a complex enough combat system, people don't seem to care much. On the other hand, it wasn't until Dom 3 that the AI would build castles, ever.
You're going to hate me, Brad... I like Dominion's combat system. It's hideously complex, because the computer can do the work, and includes some of the following: Longer weapons can "fend off" shorter ones - if the shorter weapon attacks, and the longer weapon hits, the attacker has to make a morale roll [and take a point of damage] to even swing. Shields have an armor value, high, that adds to the armor value IF the parry happens. (again, this is a chance-to-hit/damage syste
"Well, there is a difference between "perfect balance" and "so blatantly overpowered that you steamroll everything easily". The imbalance in MoM was of the latter kind" ... well, that pretty much covers MY post.
Retried X-com last year ($5.00 on Steam ). Started out going "Yeah! This is as good as I remember it!" I lost it about away team 15. "OK, THIS guy gets the Heavy Cannon, no I didn't want him to have armor piercing loaded- do I look stupid? THIS guy gets the plasma pistol/motion detector, oh for the love of Murphy why can't you just remember what the loadout looked like last time? Oh yeah, because the game is fifteen years old and was built by a team of twelve guys. " MoM has a
Here's the thing: look at the graphics in the GAME. Back in 1997 or so I was playing it after-hours at work, and a two-levels-up boss walked by and admired my chickens (wyverns) and goats (hell hounds.) Those Draconian Workers are a pretty good example of the kind of detailing we got back then. (as far as "steps backwards"- Dominion 3 has even worse graphics. For what it's worth.)
... someone beat me to this:
Enemy movement in tactical combat is so simplistic and easy to predict that you often win battles you probably shouldn't have.
I had to read that twice to realize you weren't talking about MoM. The number of times I've ended up with six units at 2 hit points each while they ended up with no working units is... well, number of times I've played the game, times about half the number of fights. I'ma make
My point, I guess, is that if you're going to compare Elemental to MoM (or any other game) you should compare it to the ACTUAL game, warts and all. I think Elemental SHOULD be able to do things better than Master of Magic- computers are literally a thousand times faster, we've got generations of game design knowledge we didn't have then, and so forth- but I saw three, four different people complaining that Elemental was worse than MoM because of things that it did, in fact, better. &n
I'm new here, but a lot- A LOT- of people have complained that this game is no Master of Magic. Example- sorry to pick on this in particular, but I've read a lot of similar sentiments since I got here:
I dont know but for me I was sold on this game being a sequal for Masters of Magic, and that Stardock even went so far as to try and purchase the license for it. Of course that didnt pan through but it was still sold as the spiritual successor to Master of Mag
First point: Master of Magic went through something like three major patches- back before the internet was common, when you had to get a floppy disk or something. This is not new. Second point: I've found a few different versions of this quote, but " A late game is only late until it ships. A bad game is bad until the end of time." I'm thinking this isn't a bad game- it's a good game that isn't done yet. On the other hand, Master of Magic (pretty much the target audi
Is there a general "bug list" somewhere? Cause in the campaign game, I just managed to accidentally buy two Bazaars in a row somehow, the turn I went to level 3, even though this took me to negative Materials.
BoydofZINJ said
The game does lack polish in that aspect. I just got the game last night. I was doing well on Extreme. Until I realized that this one enemy computer CPU had 3 cities that were 5 times my size and my two cities were still stuck at level 1. Then i realized how to gather the resources within my influence (the clay, the fertile land, the goldmine). The game sure did not help me much in realizing that I needed to do something to th
