How to end a war

Typical situation: buddy is cornered at start up and ran out of land grab room so he starts a war of conquest with me. I have managed to hold him off but grow weary. How can I go about termianting the war? DO I have to beat him up a fair bit or will he tire of his troop ships being blown asunder?

If he's taking major losses, just speak to him (foreign tab, chose the race, button under his portrait), and offer peace. If you are clearly stronger he'll gladly accept. If he thinks he can still beat you, then you might have to give him something to satisfy him. Then again, it might be best to just invade and take his planets, you can never have too many of those.

The enemy will usually make peace when his military rating is lower than yours. When that happens, just go to the diplomacy screen and ask for peace.

Though if you're a fair bit stronger than them, they may be convinced to make peace, as well as pay you off to do so. I've done this to quite a few who attacked me when I was weaker.
