Just because I have not found anything about this, does not mean there are not any short term (or long term) plans to do anything about it, so sorry if I bring something up, that is not new.
So to the point... when it comes to fleet management, I feel as playing a 30 yr old game (even the original master of orion had better fleet management) and I feel sad about the lack of progress in this...
Example: when I want to swap a ship in a fleet, I first have to eject that ship, and move the other ship on top of the fleet. WIth some luck, the ship will be added, on the other hand, the fleet will be added to the ship (that just got moved there) and will be randomly renamed. If there are 2 fleets in the same field and I want to swap ships, I have to eject them, move one fleet away and move the ships I want onto the fleets to add them... thats just... blergh.
Suggestion: ship that occupy the same galaxy map field should NOT automaticaly form a fleet, instead there are just (ie) two ships in the same field. Then, the fleet management window can be used to form a fleet by drag & drop of the ships into a desired fleet. (Same happens when there are two fleets in the same spot, a simple drag&drop of ships will make the swapping do).
Another point is the "leading ship" of the fleet. As fast as I can tell, the fleet is represented on the map with the icon of the leading ship and tehre is no way of changing the leading ship (or the icon, example: I have a fleet of 5 large capital ships and 1 tiny interceptor, and the interceptor is the leading ship and the fleet moves around the map with a tiny ship icon... yay).
Suggestion: the players should be able to change the ship order within the fleet (just like it is possible with build queues).
Long term goal: formations.
