Some thoughts about this game and a request for help :)

Want to say first of all I'm having a blast with this game - thanks Stardock! I'm playing against "intelligent"-level AI opponents.

1) The philosophy behind the game seems conceptually flawed. You start off being aware of all the other races in the galaxy even though you haven't yet begun exploring the galaxy. Surely a "first contact" scenario with each race would make more sense and be more realistic?

2) Thus the AI knows you exist before you have even come across it.

3) The AI seems to be able to research techs at a MUCH faster rate than the human player is able. It seems therefore impossible to be on a par with the AI tech level.

4) The AI seems to be able to colonize worlds at a much faster rate than the human player. Where does it get all that money from?

5) The AI seems able to build up a strong economy no matter what. I tend to have more set aside in my Treasury than the AI but have a much smaller economy nonetheless. Can anyone offer any tips for improving your economy?

Um, that's exactly what happens if you set your opponents to "unknown" in the setup screen.

Set "blind exploration" in the setup, then you can only see what you have exploered. I get a "first contact" screen when I first contact a race which includes some introductory message from their leader. I guess you must be talking about the campaign scenarios.

They're not faster than me! hehe.

The concept seems to be that the races are aware of each other through some sort of sub-space radio that allows communication throughout the game. You do need to research technologies to actually talk to each other. As said above, there are options that affect this concept. The blind exploration option lets you decide whether that subspace radio revealed original home planet locations or not.

The AI is out-teching and out-expanding you because it knows the game better than you. That is very likely to change.

The AIs' bonuses at higher levels is quite formidable. The human's main advantage is in prioritizing.

BTW, any Treasury level more than enough for an emergency represents under-utilization of resources, which one cannot afford at higher levels.

Unless you're winning by a big margin, then I would hang on to your credits so that you can keep cementing your lead with fleet-wide upgrades.
