How do I start a War using Senate?

This is my first play through GalCivII, what a game ! Just the kinda of depth I'v been looking for.


So anyway,
I'm playing Terrans, just about at the early to mid point in the game, with a Mercintile Republic. I have 4 planets in a medium sized galaxy and i seem to be doing ok. (i'm everyones friend, they get a lot of money from me through trade)

Things are heating up though, and everyone has gotten fed up with the Korx, and are now beating up on them quite badly. So I might as well go along for the ride, they got a couple of nice planets on my borders and I want a piece of that action.

I've built up an invasion fleet with troop transports with plenty of Missle crusier and fighter support. I arrive in thier star system, with not a bit of resistance in sight, so I head straight for the planet.


Since i never did this before i'm not sure what i should do next. first I send my ships(crusiers) to attack the planet. nothing. the ships don't move. ( I tough I may have to bombard the planet first)

Next I send my troop transport onto the planet. nothing happens.

Hmmm.... what the hell ? I spend the next 20 mintues looking through the UI to see if there is some senate vote option for war. If there is I didn't see it, it was late so i quit.

from reading the threads this morning i see that you can offer an attack in the trade screen. So I'll do that if need be.

But how do I start a senate vote for war, is there a screen or is it just that the vote is cast at the time you try to attack, if the vote passes, you attack, if not, nothing happens. if this is the case can you not see the results of the vote for war ?

Just attack, u automatically get a senate vote.

U r not allied with the race u r attacking r u?

for those of us who don't read single letters
If you're allied with the race you're attacking you need to break the alliance in the diplomacy screen. If you're not allied with them, then you can just move your ships onto the planet and it should attack, (or at least give you a warning first).

I'm pretty sure I'm not allied with them (I am on good terms), I'll have to double check that later on tonight when i get home. I had just allied with the Thalian and the Drath before I went to attack, they are also in a war with the Korx. (maybe I allied with the korx by mistake, I had actually offered the korx surrender by mistake a few turns previous, imagine my shock when i got back to the map screen   )

I had thought perhaps one of my allies had taken the planet, but the icon on the planet still shows korx.

Thanks for the help, I'm sure i'll figure it out qucikly enough tonight, I want war, so war there will be .

Single letters don't save work. According the the Law of Conservation of Effort work can be transferred, in this case from the writer to the reader. And since no transfer of effort is perfect, there is always loss. So, while the writer may save a bit of work, he creates a lot of work for the reader.

There's some math to back this up, but frankly I doubt if anyone here would understand it (mostly because I made it all up and it doesn't really make sense).

I think the OP is not aware of a couple things. First, a ship has to have a troop carrier (making it a troop transport) to invade a planet. Second, if the planet has any ships in orbit, those have to be destroyed before a planet can be invaded. So, if your troop transport has no weapons and there is an enemy ship in orbit of the planet you wish to invade, it will just sit there when you right click on the planet. Conversely, if a planet has no ships in orbit and the attacking ship has no troops on board, it will just sit there when you right click on the planet.

Until you get a handle on this, build warships with a troop carrier module and weapons. Load it up with troops when you take it out of orbit. Ships of this type will get action any time you right click on an enemy planet. Personally, I build troop transports without weapons and attack ships without troop carrier modules so I always have to look first.

BTW, attempting to attack an ally will put up a message saying that you need to break the alliance first. I don't think that's the OP's problem.

BBTW, investing in espionage will allow you to look at enemy ships in orbit with detail.
