I have put scanners on starbases and I agree that's helping to spread influence quite a bit. I used the largest galaxy size and I'm glad I turned off Prestige victory as I was too far from the Mimots to have slowed them down much before I think they'

Some good points by the OP and others. I've got a couple of points (note that I last played in mid-April and I played at Normal difficulty): Victory: When getting close to a prestige victory , it would be nice if the other players ganged up on you. I purposely declared war on a bunch of AIs just for excitement near the end. Maybe jack up the diplomacy negatives as you get closer (-1 at 750 points, -2 at 800, -3 at 850,
