they get it in back and then some by raising everyone's rates. That is exactly the problem. Damages from lawsuits prompt increased premiums. (Although I am skeptical of the "and then some" part.) Private education tends to be cheaper when you are talking about primary and secondary education.<

The real problem is in the insurance companies themselves that are fraught with high deductibles and unreasonable cushioned premiums dedicated to the preservation of an excessively profitable bottom line I haven't been hearing that insurance companies are making out like bandits. In fact, the insurance companies are the ones that pay out the damages on the lawsuits.

The last time a Democratic Presidential candidate won a true majority of the popular vote was 1976, although Clinton was close in 1996 when the unemployment rate was the same as today. The Democrats loved Dean, but he was sacrificed on the altar of electibility. When Clinton won in 1992, the economy was much worse than today, and there was a third party candidate who split the Republican-leaning vote.

Kerry is going to spend hundreds of billions in new health coverage beyond what Bush wants to spend. Both candidates have made essentially the same pledge regarding the deficit, to cut it in half in (5 Bush, 4 Kerry) years. I don't like either candidates position on the deficit, but I don't see how Kerry can reign it in while adding another huge health care program.

Yes, there is a difference between 1. Social Security, the "retirement savings" plan (I use the word retirement savings very loosely) 2. Social Security, the program that provides benefits to the disabled, etc. #1 should be eased into the private sector which will earn more for the people who worked for the money. #2 would be better handled by the general fund than a regressive payroll tax.
