The problem I always have with vasari, at least on random maps, is that neutral extractors are almost always metal. They give a lot of metal too, so I don't know if I have the illusion of having not enough crystal or I just get a ton of metal it makes my crystal income look like crap. On top of that I always get metal planets and all my allies get crystal lol.
Maybe it's just me, but as TEC I'm always buying tons of metal and crystal, so even if the vasari player is sho

that's true actually, I had the unfortunate experience of playing against someone today who didn't leave and I had to spend 30 mins destroying his planets even though he had no hope of winning, only to get minidumped right before killing the last planet. Hide the farm was bad enough in warcraft but it would be even worse in this game where you can take 10 mins to travel from one side of the map to the other.
But I must say, sorry you wrote all this up when it's essentially worthless with the patch lolWhat? How is this info not useful still. Even if a few changes occur patch to patch, this is still an excellent resource (esp with the recordings) for new players or those that wondering how they might juice their game up a little.
yeah too bad the replays don't work with the current version though. Still a good guide.
Units that I consider more or less use

Good post, more people need to know about this. If you're vasari you need to grab those neutral extractors and take advantage of your metal/crystal 2in1 research ASAP, playing against a TEC player going trade you won't be waiting long before the credits start to roll in from selling on the black market.

Ok for those of you still saying "deal with it", here's a screenshot of the 1v1 I played today on a small random (with pirates set to inactive). Notice how the only way I can get to my enemy (or beyond my starting four planets) is going through the pirates. Needless to say I chalked up my first MP loss this game, although it was a really fun game in the end, I did manage to smuggle a coupl

Generally I've found that it's almost always better to fill out existing logistics slots with trade centers before expanding to a new world. The only time I'll expand first now is if I haven't got trade yet (early game) or if I want a specific planet for tactical reasons. With the new black market system, the return you get from building more trade centers will outweigh the return you get from expanding easily. refineries are also pretty worthless now considering their expens

I'm sure I will have stopped playing Sins long before SC2 comes out, SC2 isn't even in beta yet. For me I doubt I'll be playing Sins much once twilight of the Arnor comes out (yeah I'm waiting for the release version cause I hate betas)
A little semantical qualification. If you consider the price of the planet upgrade to be 1500 credits, (750 to buy crystal, 750 for the actual upgrade) then you make the money back in 950 seconds, or just under 16 minutes.
just under 16 mins sounds right, if the OP is right and it takes 8 mins to recover the money once it's fully populated then assuming linear pop growth you'd pretty much just double the 8 mins and take a bit of time off because you reach f

I think the title should be changed to "what is the point of upgrading pop at the start" because I think that's what the OP is trying to get at. Buying 200 crystal is a no brainer, if your build order is anything other than rushing with tier 0 light frigates you'll be short on crystal and have an abundance of credits if you don't buy crystal at the start. If anyone could be bothered testing or doing the math of upgrading pop at the start versus using the money to buy civic labs and tech

Actually the whiners in the forums are a very vocal minority of hardcore gamers, the majority of which are busy actually PLAYING the game and if they do post it's often constructive and not inflammatory, with the best interests of the game at heart. In the end if a game is not balanced and the developers don't show an interest in making it so then most of the competitive gamers will just leave for another game instead of whining about it, again it's a very small percentage that will activel

Whether or not SC2 will be a decent game remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure: I would take battle.net even in it's 1998 form over the crap multiplayer interface that comes with just about any "modern" RTS that's been released since, Sins included. If Blizzard make such dated games then how come none of the "revolutionary" titles that have proceeded Starcraft have been able to do that one simple thing as well as something that came out 10 years ago?
No. My complaint is about the AI.If you play unlocked then for whatever reason the AI (those that have come in contact with the human player) will ignore other AI players and basically send all forces after the humanoid player. Does that make sense to you? This screenshot is from so early in the game (check the fleet ship icons) that it's fairly obvious one AI left his home systems basically defenseless to fly all the way across the system to assault the human player. The other two were at

Yeah I think the problem is the AI doesn't know the value of holding a chokepoint planet, so instead of buckling down and fighting tooth and nail for that planet - for example by throwing up turrets/repair stations/hanger defense when it sees an enemy fleet incoming like a human player might do, it just runs away if you have a bigger fleet than it does. A classic example of this was when I was playing a 1v1 versus a human opponent on ICO, I attacked one of his chokepoint planets an

I don't care if pirates don't bother you, it doesn't matter. The fact is that some people don't like them and since it was in the game before and won't take the developers more than a few seconds to put the option back in it should therefore be put back in for people who want it.

I agree, culture tech is much less useless in the new patch. But while we're on the subject of useless units in the new patch, I've found refineries to be pretty useless now seeing as under the new black market system you never have to pay more than 300-400 credits for metal/crystal it's better and cheaper just to fill those slots up with trade ports instead and buy all the metal and crystal you need.

Agree with OP, nothing worse than having all your units move through a pirate base when you have them rallied to your cap ship, sure you can easily get around it with some micromanagement but it's still annoying, they had the random map with no pirates there before, why can't they bring it back.
I had such hopes for SW:EAW. Then I found out it was simply a badly-designed game that always played out the same damn way, over and over, with little actual strategy or even tactics (since the 'maps' you fought in were so damn tiny).
Like every star wars based strategy game ever made. LA make great lightsaber hack n slash games but they've proved time and time again that strategy games are best left to the likes of Blizzard/Westwood/Stardock.

My suggestions to you: a) actually read the reviews instead of just looking at scores. b) either wait until the demo comes out, or find some other way to play the game before buying it. I agree that not having a single player campaign sucks but in the end the game has been worth the 40 bucks for me - I've definitely found the game challenging and enjoyable, it's no Warcraft3 or Galactic Civ 2, but it's certainly worth the money.

69 Replies 62,706 Views

Oh come on this is hardly an "exploit". Firstly you need the credits to start off with in order to buy that much stuff cheap, and if you sit there saving up credits while your opponent is amassing an army with his then you're screwed if he attacks. While you might be right that TEC has a slight advantage because of this, I hardly think it's game breaking. Give the patch at least a couple of weeks before bagging it, you can't have played more than a couple of actual games with it gi

I'm waiting for 1.03 before I start playing multi again, for me the games are just too long, there's not much to do between fights and there's always the chance that a game will go for 4 hours and I don't really want that. I'm looking forward to the new speed settings.
Stardock has proven that making something easy to steal doesn't equate to an incredible increase in piracy. They have proven in my case that making it more convenient to buy than steal means a gained sale, even if stealing was easy and far cheaper.
I think that's a really good point, the fact is for someone earning a steady income who isn't tied down with a family, 40-50 bucks isn't all that much to spend - it's a couple of rounds of drinks really and if you're sitting at
