You have to develop your economy first then comes the research and military. Don't purchase ships at the start of the game. It may be tempting to buy a few colony ships for quick expansion but it will hurt your early game more then help. The AI doesn't seem to do this (well I play on tough) so neither do you. I've read in the manuel that there is a module for military bases to help speed up repairs are docked ships. I can never research this module.. I never even seen it. Is there a war to make a base repair your ships faster then dead space or you need to go to the nearest colonized world to do that? I like to play in big maps with spaced out planets and with life world placed on rare. Friendly colonized planets can be very far away from the front lines. <
