I like your approach. Best to keep things up front and honest, and if other people don't like it, that's their problem. The only thing I don't like about blogging is the way that some people (and I've fallen into this trap too) take the anonimity and become abusive, saying things they'd never say to your face. Well, they might say it, but they'd find a polite way. Sometimes here, people can be rude ******s, completely gratuitiously.
We too live in a popular tourist area that people like to holiday at. Recently, old friends of ours visited for several days, thinking nothing of using our accommodation, food, toiletries, etc. without producing a penny in return. It's hard to read it and not agree that this is a serious problem plaguing westernized society. Typically, professional facilitators look at compromise as the lowest form of agreement that can be reached.
