Canadian Star Federation Thread

I figured it needed to be reposted since the #4 empire should have a current discussion thread active.

Point well taken. In that light--the diplo picks are key to cranking out more meta points per hour of game time.

The other points, such as learning to press "end turn" more often are valuable to all games, and are especially important to those of us coming over from more heavily micromanaged gaming experiences (e.g., Civ3).

Best of luck and fun to all of you, regardless of how you choose to enjoy this game!

I don't micromanage on any game, and I've played the ones that other people do. I always make use of governors, and try to automate as much as possible. Also, I'm simply not afraid to press the turn button without looking over all the details. That sounds easy enough but that's where a lot of people have problems. They can't stop themselves from looking!

Oh, and I recommend changing the autosave to 5 turns instead of 12, just so you don't have to back up so far in case your inattentiveness gets you into a war before you are ready. :-)

Challenge and metaverse points are two completely different beasts.
End of quote

True, but they are not mutually exclusive. Completely ignoring points considerations is not healthy for your Meta ranking, but completely ignoring challenge and variety may not be healthy for your fun factor. For me, the latter is a lot more urgent.

I admit to using Populist party more than any other, but that still only covers about a fourth of my games. I have taken high diplo picks only a few times. Yet I'm still on the front page in the Meta ranking.

Cranking some 30k and 35k wins on Medium and Large maps can actually keep my score moving along as fast as doing gigantics but fewer of them. And I will vary the habitability, too. On Rare maps, trade picks and party give a stronger relative boost. On Abundant maps, economic bonuses may help more. On Gigantic, +2 speed may be worth more than high diplomacy. On small maps, War Party may help you crank those early game wars, with Battle Hammers or even occasionally with Vettes. And an influence emphasis can help go for a quick cultural win.

The diplo picks are definitely the strongest ones in the game, but the +5 PQ pick is up there, too, and I admit to selecting that one for over half my games.

If you are enjoying the game more, you play more, thus score more. Cranking points with the easiest/fastest set of options may help in the short term, but can you keep it up for the long haul? Because RB is not likely to run out of steam. :) We're still picking up momentum, actually, as we got a late start at this game and our players are still learning the ropes. :)

Keep in mind that many of us in this empire do not enjoy playing GalCiv as a war game. We prefer the diplomatic game, thus our choices make sense for the style we choose to play.

In fact, if I had to play GalCiv as a war game, I would have stopped playing it many months ago... I think as a war game it is average at best. As a complete space conquest game, it has no equal.

I think I will try to bump up the difficulty level again. :p

Humm quiet... Must be playing. :)

I don't know about you others but I've been reading the threads on the Masoverse and scoring and all that 'stuff'. Seems I remember a quote attributed to Brad... 'Play the game and not the metaverse'. (Or some such thing along those lines.) I agree. The 'verse and boards are a cool add on to the game itself, but it is the game that keeps me comming back. :) Now don't get me wrong the 'verse is pretty cool, multiplayer with out the multi-player. And submitting games is part of the fun, just not the whole point, if you catch my drift. :) I mean the whole back and forth with RB is a heck of a lot of fun. :D

Well I bumped up the level again.

The game I playing now is a gigantic crippling.
Is going really well. Allied with 3 majors the other 2 are friends. I have more cash, tech, systems etc ...

Once again I won just need to get the win.

I did email Alex and ask about the details for a Canadian Star Federation Web Page.

Really though 2 concerns,

1) I did not start the Empire and I do not want to step on our leaders toes.

2) I really doubt anybody would every go to this page.

Any ideas, graphics etc... for the page ?

Paguam has said to go for it, he has no objection.

As for graphics... Not really. Although a Maple Leaf some place would be good I think. :D

I think some of the AARs in this thread with a little more detail would be worth while to put up.

2) I really doubt anybody would every go to this page.

Whatever... As long as you have fun doing it, learn some thing... then it doesn't matter how many people show up. Maybe some of the other overlords have some ideas.

And I'll tell you what. I'll show up. At least once anyway. LOL

Technician,

The only reason I haven't made a web page myself yet, is I'm too lazy! If you want to make it, I not only condone it, I encourage it! Heck, I may be able to find some time to help, if you want my help that is.

I can probably find some public domain graphics for you that you can legally put into the web page. Canadian content of course. You know, the usual stuff, maple leafs, flags, beavers, hockey sticks. :-)

Great and thanks love to get some Public Domain graphics.

I just which somebody can tell me if I can use any Stardock game related graphics ?

Hey, Technician is getting close to me in points again. I may have to play another game this weekend! :-)

I want to get cracking on our Web Page,

Try the new Altarian Prophecy Beta,

likely do Crippling again.

I want to try a few Crippling Games before I jump on the Maso Bandwagon.

I am learning quite a bit.

1) Be Agressive. Some Minor Empire Shows up and you can exploit them take all the Technology, Cash you can from them and then wipe them out.

If you do not play this way another Major Race will and you dig yourself a bigger hole.

2) Grab all the Colonies you can early.

3) Build Diploymatic Tranlators if you can get them.

4) Build constructors and freighters.

5) Every turn try for the Trades.

6) Other major races only seem to go after the best battleship first. I research other techs which give me trade goods and wonders before they get them.

My only visit across the border was a roadtrip to Guelph, west of Toronto. Good friend of mine from West Virginia whose mother is a native American from Canada was getting his duel citizenship and I drove him up there for the ceremony. Very nice folks. More cultural differences in the small details than I expected, but just goes to show how uncosmopolitan life in the States can be if you never get out to have a look around. :)

Canada in the winter was VERY interesting, too. Everyone had their heat up to like 90 degrees F. It was TOO HOT IN CANADA IN THE WINTER! How rich are you people anyway?? :SURPRISED: If I turn the heat up high enough not to need a sweater, the fuel costs start burning a hole in my pocket. :) I expected to find a bunch of eskimo bravado and admonitions about how it ain't really "cold yet" until the negative Feirenheit numbers are HIGHER than the negative Centigrade numbers for the same temperature, but no, nooooooooo. Bunch of thinblood, huddle by the heater types. We had fun joking about that. :D

I don't know about Hamilton stinking, though. What's that all about?
