Altarian Prophecy (Beta) Bug Reports

Altarian Prophecy (Beta) Bug Reports

Please specify which version of the beta you are using. You will probably be told to upgrade if you are using an older version.

Please install and run SmartException from the free stuff tab in Stardock Central so that if the beta crashes, it will generate a report that you can send to me with your debug.err files and save games.

Please update the non-expansion part of Gal Civ if you haven't, but please note that your save games will be messed up because of the additional improvements.

I will want any save games that reproduce bugs, particularly crashes.  Save games in Altarian prophecy are only one file, no folders.  Go ahead and e-mail them to me along with a description of how to reproduce the bug.  You can still report the bug here, but I always take save games that reproduce the bug.

Please report typos in the typo thread.  String Not Found bugs are not typos.  When you see a string not found, send me your debug.err file before starting a new game.

Please give as much detail as possible when reporting bugs so that I can reproduce it more easily.

Some people have reported the String Not Found bug when viewing the morality of a Saintly race. I see String Not Found for the morality of every race, regardless of their morality.

When I tried to open the map editor i found this information:

Generic application error. Enable debug output for detailed information. This sample will now exit.

What is that? A bug?

I have updated Galactic Civilizations to the latest version and have the latest version of Altarian Prophecy (Beta).

I'm having weird sound issues with the AP beta - no trouble with regular galciv 1.20.086 - The music for the new races is garbled, it just sounds like static - I switched on background loading as recommended and now there is no music at all for the new races :-P everything else works fine so I haven't poked at it since. Is it possible that the new music is encoded differently than the older music?

I've been playing the campaign - I really like a lot about it, it's well wrought out and an interesting story, but there are some problems.

Bugs:

I consistently get a crash to desktop on the fourth turn of mission 6 of the campaign. This prevents me from playing further into the campaign.

Also, on mission 6 my starting colony is on a class 10 planet.

--

Not quite a bug, but the campaign is rather unbalanced. Mission 1 is quite hard, mission 2 a lot easier, mission 3 relies on tactics which are totally non-intuitive - which is great in a late mission but not in an early one - mission 4 is easy again (build some good colonies and just give them to the Arceans, they'll become friendly in no time), etc.

Also, the messages you get at the ending of missions are rather lackluster - I'm not sure if this is just because this is a beta and you plan to rewrite them, but they don't really give you a feeling that your accomplishments are rewards, they all seem rather rushed.

Oh, and while I know how to restore campaign saves from the "reset" button, it would be really nice to be able to restore saves from in-game.

Plus, "reset" is a rather silly name for a button that doesn't reset anything but lets you load games, no?

Rally points still aren't being saved/restored properly in a savegame.

gceditor.exe- unable to locate component

This application has failed to start because d3d9.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

I get the above message when trying to use the map editor. The campaign and scenario parts work fine, and the game itself works, but I can;t get to the map editor. I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled the AP Beta a couple of times, most recently about 15 minutes ago, and still no go.

Any help would be appreciated.

With the current beta I just noticed that if you destroy the last colony in a star system any ships there just vanish. I would expect them to just leave orbit and still exist!

Is the fact that the Altarians' diplomatic stance seems to turn on a dime a bug, a feature or what? I am utterly baffled during the campaign when they and I get along great, trade technology and ships and, lo and behold, they declare war the following turn (from friendly a relationship) and it's game over. :notsure: This happened in scenario 1 several times (I figured my progress against evil was too slow) but now it happens in scenario 2 as well. I trade with them, I have maxxed trade routes with them, I am good enough for the interface to show I am good...it just feels that I arbitrarily just lost. If I have to win in so many turns otherwise a condition kicks in, I ought to know that and not have it look like an Act of God.

That is part of DirectX9, not GalCiv.

Bug: When starting a game from a map, AP adds in resources AND it edits the map file without modifying the "modfied" date/time on the file. Naughty naughty! This UNBALANCES the design. If there is less then GC:AP's normal amount of resources in the map, so what? It shouldn't matter if there is 1, 5, or ~1 resource per sector (seems to be AP's preferred level). This will drive some designers mad.

Minor Bug: Base MFC studio icon for "Doc" is shown on custom maps. Someone needs to make a more appropriate icon for them. ;) Or copy over GC or the Map Editor into it at least.

Minor Bug: Editor by default saves maps to My Documents, but AP does not look for maps there. Of course, since AP actually changes the map files to suit its minimul requirement needs, this might be a good thing.

Nasty UI Bug: Occasional, Map Editor inserts a NULL object, rather then whatever the User said to insert. Then, no further objects can be inserted into that space until the User first deletes the NULL object. This often occurs when a User "clears" stars or resources. This is nasty because of how the hot zones for squares work... if user isn't near the center of each square, objects are not actually inserted. When a NULL object gets inserted, the user can click and click and click, and no object inserted. Easy to frustrate user since he thinks he just isn't close enough to the "active" detection/resolution region in the center of the grid. So, whenever you guys get a chance...

Thanks for the fun game!

Thanks Arturus, knowing what I was looking to fix helped solve the problem.

Map Editor and/or game bug. I created a custom map that had two stars with habital plants in the same sector as my homeworld. When I started playing this map I naturally colonized the two star system. When I did this the game moved my capital to the star that was colonized last. So unless I created a second habital planet in my homeworld star system and colonized that planet last my capital was moved form my homeworld.

Again, IS THERE SUPPOSED TO BE A GUIDE TO USING THE MAP EDITOR? Or do I just have to have an advanced degree in computer nerdiness?

I noticed that there are some documents located in:
\Program Files\Stardock\Drengin.net\AltarianProphecy\Editor Docs

I haven't actually LOOKED at them, but I would suggest you start looking there and see if there is any useful information on how to use the map editor.

CTD:

If a map does not have enough STARS available for AP to allocate to minor races, it crashes at start up. (And the game should actually pay attention to the "disable starting minors" setting in set up screen.)

This is easily repeatible CTD.

* Start a new in Map Editor.
* Create a map where only all Majors have a starting homeworld. (Assign as appropriate).
* Save out map.
* Exit map editor.
* Copy new map over to the map directory of AP.
* Start a new game of AP.
* Specify new map in new game start up screen.
* Disable "Starting Minors"
* Watch start up until game crashes to desktop.

Thanks for the fun game!

Minor bug:

My star fighters are not getting experience for destroying enemy mini-freighters. Alien corvettes are.

I'll keep an eye out and see if my other war ships are getting experience for killing mini-freighters. They were in previous AP games. But I did not recall if the star fighters had earned XP for killing mini-freighters in those games.

UI Bug with Map Editor:

Save does not work when file already exists.

Workaround: Use "Save As..." command so User can confirm they wish to over-write existing file.

Ok, I tried to open the map editor, and I get an error message saying that, "d3d9.dll" was not found, so it couldn't load.

KEmperor, that's a DirectX 9 problem, from what has been reported on the forum. Try reinstalling DirectX 9 and then try the map editor again.

Correction regarding resources, AP, and Map Editor.

I had thought that AP was adding in the resources due to an odd behavior in the Map Editor. I am doing further testing (Playing :D) to see if AP did actually add in additional resources. This could also affect whether or not the "Save" command is properly over-writing existing files. I need to do further testing to ascertain the actual behavior (over-writing or not without asking).

Here's the ACTUAL error that is occuring:
Map Editor is only clearing/reseting the display icon of Resources when the Resource menu item "Clear" is selected. The Resources themselves are remaining. To delete Resources of a map, user MUST use the context menu over the Resource to be Deleted, and select Delete. The Resource is then Deleted, but the Grid Square will continue to Display the Resource. A save and reload of the map will show that the Resource no longer exists.

Well, thanks for the game! I'm off to rebuild a few maps now that I've discovered how resources keep appearing after being cleared.

Thanks, that did the trick. I think the problem was that I had DirectX 8 installed.

Hmmm, isn't that what usually happens with the AI's?

YES!!!!! THANKS!!!!!!!

I had looked through all the GAME directories - didn't think of the STARDOCK directory.

not sure if this has been said already but:

saved games for the campaign are in their own seperate folder, which is a great idea, except that it looks in the normal saved game folder for them. oops

and on mission 5?? of the campain where you are to kill the torians, my survey ship was more than slightly powerful. it had over 150000 attack, and 4000000 defense. Needless to say the torians surrendered on turn three once i got war declared on them. I was able to duplicate this bug by hitting gaurd/and then survey while the ship was still in the process of doing the gaurd mode order. It seems to happen only on this map.
