Changing default ship names and system names

Hello all, I have been an avid Gal Civ player and lurker since the game was first released. I am also an avid space empires player. I was wondering how I could mod the ship names and possibly system names files. I realize you can manually rename ships, but if the default names could be changed it would remove the tedium of repeated changing. Space empires has spoiled me with its simple modability. I looked at the files and am unable to open them, thanks for any and all responses.

I don't think that is anything else you could do at this moment about that, except changing the name of the star systems individually.

default planet names can be changed in "galciv\data\stars.lst". dont know about ship names though. just typeover the orig names, or add more! :)

It would be nice if the ability to name planets were in the expack

Do you mean just the starting ships, or the ship name format? (ie USS Freigher 502)

I think that I put the strings for the names of the USS Discovery, etc, in English.str if you want to change those.  You can open English.str with a text editor.

follow this easy guide to permanently change ship names....

1. open "galciv/data/" folder
2. d/click 'English.str (use wordpad or similar program)
3. press CTRL+F
4. enter "Hero" press ENTER
5. change second name (one not in brackets) from USS Hero to whatever you want
6. save changes

thats it! next time you start new game you will have ship called whatever you want.
works for the transport too. :)
