GalCiv: not so much a game, more a way of life. But within GalCiv, there is plenty of room to invent your own mini-games. What do you play?
Buff the Minor
In this popular sport, you farm minor races, protect them from harm, and give them the techs for things like economic and manufacturing capitals. When they’ve built everything you want, conquer them immediately.
Starbase Lucky Dip
Fun for all the family! In Masochistic games, the AIs won’t give you money for your techs. If you have a lot of techs, and they have nothing better to trade for, why not try swapping them for starbases? The tricky thing is that unless you’ve got sensor drones everywhere, you won’t know what each base is equipped with, and the AI charges the same amount for all of them so as not to give anything away. Pay the price, and pick a starbase number you like the look of! Will it be a +68% Influence Resource? Or just one of those pointless upgrade-free bases in the middle of nowhere that the AIs like to build? It’s the suspense that makes it fun! No reloads allowed.
The Amazing Military Swap
Have you got more money than you know what to do with? Try starting a war between two of the smaller races. Buy up all the military ships on one side. Then sell them all to the other side and buy all his military ships, and sell those to the original side. Watch them fight a war using each other’s armed forces! Chortle at the irony of planets being conquered by their own troops!
Inappropriate Music Jukebox
This is an easy game. Find the mp3 files for the ingame music and replace them with your illegally downloaded song files in humorous combinations. For example, instead of the deafening military music that normally accompanies the Drengin conversation window, why not make it play ‘All You Need Is Love’?
Your Name In Stars
Can you spell out a message or draw a picture in the radar window? You have two main tools at your disposal. Firstly, use starbases in conjunction with the existing stars to create the desired image. If there are any extraneous stars getting in the way then blow them up with Terror Stars, if necessary colonising the worlds and gifting them to aliens first. So far, the best I’ve done it to spell ‘Hi!’, killing just 64 billion Torians in the process. Can you do better?
