Windows XP upgrade......

Im considering upgrading my POS ME to XP, and i went to www.windows.com to get info on it. My comp meets all the qualifications except for the fact that i cant find my processor speed (MHz). Where would i look to find this info??

Since ME is a disaster of an OS...unless it was working perfectly for you [yeah, right] consider a clean install...not an 'upgrade'.

Jafo so is right...lose ME before installing ....you can still purchase the upgrade version though and it'll just ask for your ME install disk to verify you qualify for an upgrade, then install the whole system

Thanks guys, and yes i fkn hate ME sooooo much, so XP will be my Christmas gift this year. Ive already tried control panel>systems, info isnt there so im gonna try the other suggestions.


And Essencay, so i need to unistall all of ME, the install the whole XP system after using the ME disk to verify?

When I installed XP on my machine, I burn all my important files to cd's then reformatted my harddrive....you'll have to do what's right for your situation. Since you have until Christmas....you should do some research at XP related sites

I do...I upgraded from ME to XP two years ago. I had never done anything like that (on my own) but am so glad I did! Agree with Jafo...it's best to just do a clean install and start fresh. It took me several tries to get it right. Before I started, I bought a book called Windows XP - The Missing Manual, and studied the upgrade portion. Good luck! You'll not regret it!

/me has XP home on 1 puter and XP pro one the other.

I've had no problems with either, they both work great.

I upgraded to XP Home...in retrospect, I probably should've/could've went with the Pro version, but I'll stick with this for now. I use Pro at work.

I was just talkin to som1 abt the upgrade, and he sed that completely uninstalling ME and then installing XP would require a reformat (which i knew) but i think this is too hard for me to do so i was wondering what can happen and wat is wrong with just installing XP without uninstalling ME first????

It's all a preference thing...whatever you feel comfortable with. Do you back up your files/data regularly? How long have you been using your ME system, and how much of your drive is filled up? You would definitely need to back up all your data files (at least) and other important files, but that's recommended even for an upgrade. Plus, for a clean install, you would need to choose between FAT and NTFS file system (I chose NTFS). I did a clean install because I didn't want any of the "bugs" from ME to migrate over to XP. Yeah, it required me to go through and reinstall my apps and files, but I was able to be selective about it, and clean up my system.

Ok ama, i dont back up my files or data regularly, as i have nothing of great importance on my comp. I have been using ME since it came out in 2000 (its crazy i kno). I have only used 2.75 GB of my C drive and i have 15.8 GB available. Also, i def dont want any of the ME bugs to get over into XP. im gonna go research the whole clean install process as well as FAT and NTSF file systems.

There's one other possibility. Have XP set up another partition and install XP there. This would be a dual-boot situation, when you boot up you would be presented with a screen offering which operating system to boot into.
