Windows Backup to OneDrive

I am preparing to extend Windows 10 beyond the October deadline. To enable "free" continued support Microsoft are offering the option to turn on Windows Backup, which includes backing up the Desktop.

However when I do this the operation of Fences is disrupted. Most shortcuts are moved out of my fenced areas back on to the actual desktop. Also in many cases, especially folders, they revert to the default icons.

The result is a messed-up desktop.

Fortunately I have a recent system backup, so I can recover the situation and then exclude the Desktop from the backup operation. However I am concerned that any subsequent Windows Backup may result in a reoccurance of the problem.

Anybody else had a similar experience ?

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. From what I understand, when using OneDrive desktop sync, you will get the issue with icon dropping back to desktop from the Fences. What you should do is with OneDrive desktop sync turn on, you will need rearrange manually everything again and than make a new backup layout. This than should work with OneDrive desktop sync.

I use OneDrive to back up my computer, and have for years. I am using Fences 6.0.3.1 and don't have this issue. The backup does not cause my fences to revert to the Desktop.

Also, you are not required to back up anything to OneDrive except your Windows Settings in order to enroll in the Extended Support for Windows 10.

You can turn off the Desktop sync by following the directions below.

Click the OneDrive icon in your System Tray and then the Setting icon in the top right corner and select Settings. Now click Manage Backup, and turn off Desktop.

Thanks for the suggestion.

In the short-term I had already decided to leave the Desktop off the backup list.

I am not sure if I have done enough to meet the extended support requirements - no confirmation received. I will just have to wait until 14th Oct.
