I like to start a game with next-to-nobody nearby so I have time to build up my empire before first contact.But the setting that at first appears to make sure other civilizations start out far away seems to do very little; there is usually one right in my backyard.
This is something we are actively looking into, and constantly working on rebalancing to get right
