Turn Freezes

Title: Stuck turns

Body

Version: 0.65 alpha

Details: Stuck turns midway through game.

How to Reproduce: Seems to be more prevalent when transports are attempting to invade enemy planets. Also noticing an extreme slowdown in mouse speed, "lag" when clicking on anything (planets, governors pages, etc.).

What's happening is that i'm about mid-game and using transport fleets to attack enemies. The turns are sticking without any ability to advance the turn. When it happens, the gameplay speed slows way down like there's some sort of lag. Mouse and Zoom functions crawl, I can't double click anything properly, extreme lag when selecting ministers on the minister screen, lag on planet screens, etc.. Then things just freeze and sit there. My only solve is to save the game, exit the game completely and then re-load the game "cold boot" style.

Hope this helps.

The MPSaves folder is for multiplayer saves.  You need to look in the Saves folder.

Oops. Okay, here's a link to the save .ZIP file.

Thank you for reporting this. I've shared it with the team to see what they think. There's a chance this might already have been resolved ahead of the next update though.

That's all I can ask. I also submitted a little "gripes" list in a different section of the forums about little tweaks that might make the game better. Overall, it's getting pretty playable. I'm really liking several new aspects of the game but wish I had a few old options from previous games back. I've loved GalCiv since version 2.

The next update should be going out on the test branch sometime today by the way. Be sure to verify your files before playing.

Yep, okay. So...  I upgraded the game when it loaded. No fix on my end unfortunately.

About ten more turns in and again i've developed a stuck turn. It's happening with invasions. I'll attach my latest save game. The turn froze again while transports and other ships are attempting to invade Valerian I. Have a look at my save game at Valerian I in the Dregen empire and you'll see two fleets of ships (one fleet with just a single transport in it) attempting an invasion. Once I set them to start the attack, they begin pounding the planet and the turn sticks with no ability to advance the turn. Immediately previous to ordering the ships to invade, i'd just finished upgrading planet construction efforts for captured and annexed planets.

I know you guys are off for the holidays, so this bug fix will be waiting upon your return. Have a happy holiday season and a wonderful New Year. Thanks for helping out an old 4x game freak.

Cheers,

-John

*update*

So, when I loaded up the game, it appeared to do some sort of a quick update but it didn't auto-update to version .70. It still said version .65 alpha, so I closed the game and went into the epic game launcher. I saw where there was a greyed out "test version" that was downloadable so I downloaded it and it updated the game to version .70.

No stuck turns so far (knocks on wood). I'll keep you updated.

PS: When I did the manually installed update available on the epic games launcher, it re-installed the game completely instead of trying to over-write .65 alpha. So, I have two separate GalCiv's on my PC right now. Easy for me to fix but you should be aware.

There are two separate downloads, one is the regular game, the other is the Test branch, for patches before they go "final".

Gotcha. I have noticed some speed improvements in the game and some of the repetition is a bit better but I still can't access a tech that i'm supposed to have access to (researched all previous required techs) directly from the tech tree screen. For example, the game puts up five suggested techs to research and if you ignore one for too long, it drops it from the suggestions list. You can see the techs from the tech tree screen but clicking on them does nothing to bring them up on the suggested tech research screen, so you can't really research them.

I'm also still getting stuck turns, too. It's better but it's happening when i'm sending out fleets to invade planets. It's almost like the invasion wants to continue and not pause for the end of the turn. I watch my little fleets get stuck in a loop pounding a planet from space as the rest of the turn's progress halts. My workaround so far was suggested by another contributor, which is to save the game, exit to the main menu and then restart the game.

For the wonderful bug finding coders of Stardock: I'm happy to re-upload my save game files to my google drive for your review. Let me know when you're back to work and ready for it.

Cheers and happy to help. It's getting really cool, guys.

P.s.: I haven't done it in a while but I tried to hex edit the save file to see if I could identify any features of the game saves for anything that looked familiar (owned planet names, credits, etc.). I didn't see much if anything that I could recognize on site but I didn't take a hard look at it either. I guess my old nostalgic hacker skills have gone by the wayside.

Cheers,

-John H.
