How do I retain the same ship color as the ships have on the steam workshop?
Even when I choose the "default" ship style for my race, it still loses its real color and becomes the same color as everything else.
Colors always come from the race settings. The colors you see on the workshop are just whatever the creator had them set to on their race.
Incorrect, Base ships for game always show up in shipbuilder and icons as the base color of the faction who's ships they are. This is a known issue and annoying in the game that the icons both in the list and at the bottom of the screen do not match the ships on the map. 
Hopefully this will reflect correctly soon.
OP was asking why the colors in the game don't match what was shown on the workshop. Thumbnails being pre-rendered to improve performance (and not being automatically invalidated if you pick different colors on your race) is a different matter.
This is why I was confused. the ships are showing up with the "correct" colors in the shipbuilding menu to the left, but then "changed" color when I selected it. didn't know those pictures were pre-rendered.
I like the performance boost if that is what it does, just wish it wasn't thanks for the reply on that as well.
