Influence Question

I am playing on crippling and when I meet my first aliens, there influence according to the graph has generally just increase by several times in an amost vertical line. What are they doing to pump up influence so quickly in the very early part of the game?

Them grabbing a lot of planets in the early colony rush combined with a high population growth will do that. Sure, some of those systems may be zero base influence when colonized, but a race with high population growth can make that up quickly. Throw in a couple of naturally high influence systems and it can get nasty in the early stages. All those systems add influence together, so there is strength in numbers on both the individual system (by population) and by a large amount of systems owned (additive effect).

Ok - it seemed strange to me that I keep pace or ahead on population and close on economy but their influence just goes straigt up.

Guys - early influence depends a lot on how many races you have met - your "culture" is meaningless if you haven't met anyone else yet. I would say that the alien in this situation has met more other races than you (you've only met them, right?)

The 2 "diplomatic" AI's (Arcean & Torian) also tend to build Embassies early on for a +10 influence boost.

Both will prioritize influence resources (relative to the Drengin and Altarian, who prefer Military/Economy).

And, at Maso difficulty, the AI's enjoy an inherent Influence bonus as a racial trait.
