Strange diplomatic behavior

The Yor had declared war on me. The Arceans were allies with the Yor. I had military superiority over the Arceans, so I beat them up a bit and then sold them a peace treaty. The next turn, they told me "You are at war with my ally, so I regretfully must declare war on you also." OK, we're at war again. I went to the Diplo screen and sold them another peace treaty. Not cheaply either, mind you. Next turn, they said the same thing. Sold them another treaty, etc. etc. until they ran out of money. Finally I guess they abandoned their ally and stopped declaring war on me, but by then they were completely bankrupt and I had all their tech.

Have any others noticed similar behavior? Maybe the AI code neads a little tweaking in this area?

same thing happened with me, except that i declared war on the Yor. The arceans didnt stop bothering me till i took over the last Yor planet -and also, i didnt have to kill a single arcean ship, they wanted out of the war they declared with me even before i attacked any of their ships since i was so much more powerfull then them.

i see what you mean, they need to put in a "make peace with..." option for the AI. it would have made much more sense if the Arceans bribed us to make peace with the Yor instead of them declaring war on us.

I've had a similar thing happen to me, but not back to back like that. It would be nice to force them to break their alliance instead of having to sue for peace all the time.

you can get all the techs, money and influence from them if they want to surrender even before you fight them -which is kinda cheesey. thats what happened to me, they declared war on me like 10 turns in a row, by the time i finished off the last yor, i had all the arceans techs, influence, and money.

It is one of the sacrifices of the Galciv single party diplomacy system: you must make peace with the alliance members one at a time during the same turn or else the war restarts. Even a losing war.

It would be better to make a limited multi-party diplomacy system for alliances where a weak ally will basically either call off the alliance to save their skins or say something like: "We will not negotiate any peace treaties unless you also get our ally to agree as well." And then bring both to the table at the same time on the same screen somehow and make your deals with each until an overall accord has been reached with all sides. Of course, even with this feature implemented one could still exploit stop and go wars against an alliance in order to get continual concessions if one happen to be powerful enough to cow the strongest member.

Gerakken, your suggestion would indeed be a good solution, and pretty realistic. But I imagine it would be quite a coding task, and they'll never bite something like that off. Might be easier to just force the Arceans to keep up the (losing) war or break their alliance. I dunno ...

it would be much easier if the arceans just simply used the "make peace with..." option. if only they said "i will give you 500 BC if you will promise to make peace with our allies, the YOR", instead of wageing a loosing battle against me.

the "make peace with..." option is already in the diplomacy screen, but it appears that none of the AI's have been programmed to use it.

But the problem in my case was that the Yor had declared war on me. The Yor thought they were more powerful than me. I of course liberated their minds from such a silly notion later on ... but the point is the Yor would not give me a peace treaty regardless.

As an interim solution, maybe the dev's could insert a "minimum time peace/war" counter, so that each diplomatic state had to count down a certain number of turns before the AI would accept a change in "trade".

This would stop most abuse of the "back-to-back switch" system.
