AI starbases

What are they thinking?

AI starbases seem to be random at best, wasteful at worse. Or maybe I don't understand their strategy. Why build an Economy starbase next to my colony? Why build an Influence starbase in my territory but fail to upgrade it?

Any clarification would be appreciated.

Well, not much.

I have a sloppy impression that things in this area have improved since the base game was released, but there are still some very weird behaviors from the occasional major and the incomprehensible business of minors building influence bases.

In my current game, the Korath have been being properly warlike by trying to build an array of war bases on their frontier and the Yor have been building (less than ideally located) influence bases to try pushing back my encroachment on their border. But the Carinoids and the Akilians have both built several influence bases right near their worlds, which makes no sense because they can neither flip a world nor have their homeworld flipped.

It's my opinion that the starbases serve more as a distraction and to help goad you into a war by presenting an easy and somewhat annoying target.

You want to take that undefended starbase out.  You know it and I know it.  Go ahead.  What's the worst that can happen?  :-"

And that's weird, too. Why would Yor bother with influence at all when they have their loyality all up? And (depending on the version you play) they do lack Yellow-techs as well a lot; and/or with strong soldiering/miniaturization the course of action is clear right off the start.

But yeah, I have to concede, the most irritating thing to me is the Minors putting out influence starbases (Or alternatively mining influence resources.)

Let's pick up a starbase that can do . . . nothing but tick off the Psilons. C'mon Dark Yor, don't you remember what haoppened *last* game? I wiped you out because you TICKED ME OFF!!!.

Don't do dat.

It's not really weird. Foreign ships in their zone of influence are limited to speed 3. They could be better about it, but I've done the same thing when I played as Yor. Sometimes that speed limit can make all the difference between getting a late extreme rush world deep in their territory and finding yourself wondering what to do with a colony ship stuck in the mud in the middle of nowhere.

GW, it heavily depends on the version you play. In DA, okay, but in TA you'll notice their influence is so nerfed that their zone of influence is pushed away by any other race. One of the many errors in TA. They can colonize low PQ planets in foreign terrain (and their 100% loyality usually assures that these don't flip) but their SA won't come into play at these planets. Only at their core worlds, but just having a Superbreeder aside and you won't see much Yor-space at all... That could have been done better, imagine a spot in your empire where constantly ships are stuck at with speed 3....hehe

But generally speaking, if you wanna go for influence there's only the option to either mine-out the resources, and/or built an influencer base directly at a planet and max it out. With just a basic base here (in the middle of nowhere) or there, the constructor/cost for the base is nothing but a waste, esp. for a race made for warfighting.

I've played some TA maps where the Yor didn't take and hold serious territory, but I've played others where they were most definitely a major obstacle to high-speed traffic for me and several other civs. The few times I've played as Yor in TA, I've had no problem building and holding influence turf.

But I'm not really a competitive player desplite the humble MV bling. I almost never try to 'force' a map to a conclusion, I sort of 'ride' them without a very particular destination in mind.
