1.03 and Windowed mode.

After updateing it would appear that the Windowed Mode exe was not updated. Do we have to wait everytime for a windowed mode exe to come out? Most games you add a -w or -win to the Target line of the desktop shortcut or there is a setting in an .ini file. Why is there seperate exe file? I run a dual moniter display and not running in windowed mode really sucks. :notsure:

Most games have a -w to go into windowed mode? What games would that be? None that I've purchased recently.

Perhaps it is time to remove the windowed version as an option entirely. It's something we put up there when we get a chance for people who like it. But if people are going to take it for granted then forget it.

I love the windowed mode.. no rush, take your time! LOL

Whenever it gets updated is fine by me. Actually, it is kind of cool being a bit behind. One can troubleshoot any issues with a new patch this way, as well as try different patch strategies. ;p

I read all kinds of really good posts about the awesome support, great games enhancements and how you guy's really listen to and want end user input. Then I post a question about Windowed mode and get a response like this. What gives. Did I #%$@ in your wheaties this morning or what?

I play alot of games and every one of them allow windowed mode play wether it is a command line tag setting, an .ini file switch or built right into the menu of the game. Here is a short list:

Never Winter Nights, Diablo 2, Warcraft 3, Age of Wonders 2, Dungeon Seige, Disciples 2, Dark Age of Camelot, Rally Sport Challenge, Space Empires IV. HOMM 4.

If everytime I asked was a simple question is this the kind of response I can expect to get? I really like this game and think you guy's are doing a good job of keeping us gamers happy.

Somewhat confused

Look, my point is that most games do NOT support a windowed mode. We put up an unsupported windowed version and rather than being glad that such a version exists, you treat it like this is standard stuff. I.e. "most games have X". Very few games have that. Some games do but most don't.

GalCiv requires a seperate windowed build. So we do it when we get a chance. Writing a post that implies that we're somehow behind the curve for not having some sort of integrated windowed mode really takes the incentive out of doing it at all. I know of one major strategy game recently released that not only doesn't have a windowed mode but can't be switched out of without crashing nearly every time.

Bottom line: We'll update the windowed version occasionally. It's a seperate build obviously which means it takes effort to make it.

Well, Obviously we got off to a bad start here. I am not "Implying" that you guy's are behind the curve in anyway. Compared to another recently released space strategy game, that I shall not mention, you guys are leaps and bounds ahaed.

I bought the game 2 days ago after I found out that it was really good, has great Dev support and it could be played in a windowed mode due to my dual monitor setup. It's really great having the game on one monitor and the Docs and/or Java Scouts Database up on the other.

I assumed, erroneously, that an updated windowed mode exe would have been part of the 1.03 update. When it was not then I was wondering what the process of getting it out was. If it is a seperate build and I have to wait a bit then so be it. I understand. I only mentioned the other ways games do it becouse that is what I am used to and maybe something could be implemented in the future to make it easier on everybody.

So far, I love the game, I think the support you guy's are giving post release is awesome. I hope we can have a peacfull discussion here on the forums and keep the battles in-game from now on. :)

Me smokem peace pipe.....

I like the windowed version also! I like having my usual desktop available to, not to mention ICQ...

Cool additional feature!

Vern: Sorry if I came on too strong. It is often, especially when using written communication, to convey things. When you type as many posts as I do, sometimes they end up a bit abrupt.

I'm putting up a 1.03 windowed build as we speak.

I play exclusively in windowed mode as a workaround for flaws in the user interface. I keep open a notepad file where I make notes for things that the game should track for me, but does not.

The game does not track:

- the sectors with uncolonized good planets

- sectors with unexplored anomalies

- sectors with unclaimed resources
- sectors containing resources I control, along with how built up my starbase is

- sectors with enemy resources

- which trade goods and wonders were built by enemy civs or minor civs

- which minor civs are at war and with who
- sectors where I am planning a cultural attack or military attack
I'm currently playing version 1.02.

Is it just me or do others feel strange about addressing you as "Frogboy". :) Anyway, Thank you for your response and understanding. I may have come on a bit strong myself in my post's. I feel that GalCiv is a game I have long been searching for and I am quite a bit excited playing it these past couple of day's. Thankyou for uploading the new windowed exe and I promise to be more patient in the future..

Please, keep up the outstanding support.

I think some confusion may be about whether the version numbers "track". For instance, the windowed version now is 1.03.017. Since I've never seen an 1.03.017 non-windowed version, I have that little doubt that my assumption that the relative version numbers mean something is correct.

So, to relieve my doubt, can I safely assume that the windowed version 1.03.017 is equivalent to the same internal build number for the non-windowed version, features and bug-wise?

Thanks,

-Robert
