Why I prefer Dread Lords over Dark Avatar

Does anyone still play Dread Lords? I do almost exclusively, even though I have a registered copy of DA. Anyway, my question is what do you like better? For me, I prefer DL. Why? Because it's a mature game. As in, all the tweaking and balancing has been done. From game to game I can count on the the same "rules of the road". For me, even though I may, at present, be missing out on some great gameplay, I won't be playing DA until all the tweaking and balancing has been completed. I commend the developers for their after-release support, but if the rules are going to change once again in DA v1.7, I can't commit to DA yet.

Thoughts?

Hi!
From game to game I can count on the the same "rules of the road".

Quite some time ago I complained about all games being essentially the same. Same opening, mostly the same tech path, same AIs going down by always the same tricks. For me DA is refreshing, because the game plays differently enough for me to get again some excitement back.

I won't be playing DA until all the tweaking and balancing has been completed.

IMO it's a single-player game after all. If you don't play for meta scores, then who cares for balancing. But even if you play for meta, are there ticks that completely whack the already weak scoring system, so no serious comparission of achievements again. Anyway, it's your decision. IMO you're missing quite a lot of fun.

I have the Gold Edition, but play DL exclusively for now too. I don't have a problem with DA now, I'm just not finished with DL yet.

At first, I thought pretty much like you did. Rules changing and having to re-learn it, etc. I'm warming up to the idea of DA now that I can see that DL will eventually get long in the tooth.

The changes in DA will freshen it from time to time. Mind you, that's a completely different thought process than I've had not too long ago.

Either way, the point of it all is entertainment. Galciv2 certainly makes the grade there.

I own both, but I am still playing DL. I agree with you Ferrel that it is a "mature game". It has been refined to the point where you can play the game without worrying about changing your strategies because of changes made in the latest patch. This makes it a stable game and it's like putting on a comfortable pair of shoes that have been broken in.

I think I would find it too confusing at this point to keep switching back and forth between the two. I'd rather focus on DL for the time being and get all I can out of it before moving on to DA.

DA is just a much, much better game than DL in my opinion. I've gotten three or four times as much gameplay out of DA as I did out of DL, and haven't gotten tired of it yet. It feels far more complete to me than DL. There are far more options, the AI is stronger, and it just generally comes across as a more "complete" 4x Sci Fi experience. DL always felt like it was missing so many things (lack of foreign atmospheres being a great example). It simply didn't hold my attention like DA has. I can't imagine ever going back.

You guys are only still playing DL because you are addicted to it and have not realised your addiction.

You need to find help so you can drop your addiction so you can play DA, thus solving all of life's problems.

On another note I have not played DL since I got DA, it is a far far superior game.

I could beat DL in my sleep I have played so many games. Once you know how to win at the highest level you cannot help following the same patterns and strategy's. DA got me thinking again. Need things to keep changing to keep playing. I love the updates, the nerfs, the changes, anything to keep me thinking new strategy.

Once you figure out how to win a game at the highest level consistently you usually move on to a new game. This game just keeps on evolving.

Potentially DA is better than DL but the spy systen drags DA down kicking and screaming, and destroys it just like Davey Jonse's pet giant squid drags down ships and destroys them.

Man how could you not be bored with the game by now that's the amazing part ! At least DA is still getting updates with gameplay tweaks that makes starting a new game interesting .

I'm not bored with DL yet because I have yet to beat it on Suicidal. So here's my thing. I'm honing my strategies, and I want a solid foundation. A set of static rules. This is the only way to test one strat against another. I will get around to DA, and I'm sure I'll enjoy it. I'm just waiting until all the tweaks and balancing is over with. By that time I should have a conquest win on Suicidal. I'm getting close.
