Well, this afternoon I decided to give vista a try outside of my virtual environment and actually peform a fresh install on my PC.
First step.. I ran the upgrade advisor and obtained proper drivers which would be needed. ( Sound Card )
Last night, I purchased Trend Micro AV 2007 as my new anti-virus solution as well.

So I pop the CD in and begin the process.
Everything was going fine until I went to choose my time zone. As soon as I clicked on it.. BAM! A rock solid lock up which required a power off.
I repeated this same proceedure about 3 times with the same result. To move forward, I just stuck with Pacific Time and moved on.
In short, even after I was up and running, hard lockups were more normal regular than stable behavior...
I started anew with a fresh install and got everything installed properly. I was up and running for about 15 mins when ( I bet you can't guess.. )MORE LOCKUPS.
After a hard reboot, I ran Windows updates and flagged my C drive for a check on next reboot.
So that is where it stands at the moment. I am watching CHKDSK count and verify the massive amounts of clusters at this point.

This is the most disgusting adventure into a new MS Operating system that I have ever encountered. My system is no slouch at all and should be flawless at running this.
All I can say at this point is that to me the word VISTA has taken on a whole new meaning...

Ah Phoon....you'd need help just to run a bath.....running an OS Install?

Sounds like you have a hardware issue....

Maybe the problem is 'CD' ...or is that a typo?

The thingie you need is a DVD....looks similar...but it aint....

I found what happened with my first attempt is that my primary HD Partition was not a BASIC disk configuration but rather a dynamic, I had to delete the Partition recreate it and convert it to Basic Disk subsystem then everything installed without a hitch...no lockup and I've been running it for quite a few weeks now.

you cant blame vista itself since there are many like me that are running vista just fine, i havnt encountered any problems even from my beta audio driver.

here is the best way to ensure a smooth long running os

1.use popular namebrand hardware, even a cheap stick of ram or psu can cause oddball problems, mobo is most common cause of all problems wether it be hardware or driver related and all will vary depending on os used.
2.dont install junkware (poorly coded 3rd party apps)if you must use any, try looking up pro reviews and user reviews.
3. use only whql drivers, if you cant then test the betas or wait but dont blame os for faulty software.

I can blame Vista all I want, but it in itself was not the issue on this occasion.
Blaming vista is just a whole bunch of fun!

There are also many others that are not running it just fine, even on newer hardware.
What I am saying is that this is the most picky OS that MS has put out since the early days.

In this particualar case, it seems my integrated sound card (realtek A97) took a nose dive at PRECISELY the time I installed Vista. I don't think Vista caused it, but it is an awful strange coincidence. The forums out there are riddled with people having problems with A97 cards, even with the latest Realtek Vista drivers.
Even after reinstalling XP, the card was hosed.
I found a Sound Blaster Audigy at Wal-Mart for 29bux and have installed it just fine. I'm going to get everything updated, run the upgrade advisor again and maybe try in a few more weeks. This just wrecked my entire weekend.

I am no amateur when it comes to installing OS's. I've been in the IT field for about 15 years now and I do this every day. (Yes Jafo I can install an OS, but it's the bath I have trouble with.. lol) I meant to say DVD by the way too.

Running the bath is easy Phoon...I mastered it years ago...hot on the left,cold on the right usually...if the water keeps draining away,plug that hole under the spout.

Let me edit just a bit...
My Integrated sound card is NOT a realtek. It is a Soundmax. The upgrade advisor pointed me to the realtek drivers however. That would splain my issue of not getting it to work..  
What even odder is my previous motherboard (up until about 2 months ago) DID have the realtek A97 on it.
In any case, neither card is happy with vista. We'll see what the audigy does..

IR... I think I hit my head on the waterspout while I was searching for the drain plug. The cat saw my butt leaping up out of the water, let out a foul hiss and scream and proceeded to tear through the house in a frothing fit. This may explain my fear of bathtubs and craving for frisky biscuits!

Well, I tried it again after the new sound card was installed. It went a tad better but I still got very frequent lock ups. It may be the raid controller on the motherboard. At this point, I'm just giving up and sticking with XP.
