Spies - first impressions/suggestions (good read)

After playing a few full games (Tiny@Tough/9 opp/all-green options) as the new Spy race, I think I've got a few things that might be worth reading

1. The computer really isn't good at defending against spies. In the first few turns of the game where you see "Someone has built a X capitol!", it's like a red target to shut that thing down. I've *completely* shutdown computer opponents by disabling all factories in their home planet, while they're busy defending their Class 4 planet. The AI needs to get smarter about spies, because it's honestly too easy at the moment with them. Especially if you rush them early.

2. Super Spies ability, what's it supposed to do? I noticed no difference....

3. Placing a spy on a tile should have more meaning then just shutting down that tile - for example, I recently stole a tech even though I had spies only on factories! You should have more chance to steal tech when shutting down research centers, you should maybe steal money when on economic tiles, etc. Maybe even the ability to place spies on starports (not to shut down), but a random chance that you take the ship being built as a pirate. You get the idea - make placement more important.....I'd love to have the ability to create bad morale by placing a spy on a farm.

4. What exactly does espionage affect on spies? Ability? Faster creation? More allowed? Cheaper money towards spy creation? A better explanation would be nice. Also how about a defensive racial ability against spies? Loyalty should affect this, no?

5. No spy improving techs? Neutrals dont get stronger spies? Come on! The first thing I did when I started a new game was check out the tech tree and I was kind of disappointed...there's very few additions even besides spies

6. Maybe I missed it, but can you place spies on starbases? Asteroid plants?

7. What about spies on fleets to make them harder to detect? (Not cloaking but harder to see via sensors).

I'll post some more about other areas once I delve into it more - I'd rather get a better understanding before I scream *OMG! SUX!*, but after 4 games I won with spies on Tough (very easily I might add), I think I've got some experience to chip in with

yea i agree on pretty much all of your points.

the super spy ability gives you 1 spyu at the start and supposed to make you imune for spies. so far this doesn't work.
and indeed spies are to good against IA atm

also, imo IA should also retreat his spies if another player becomes more powerfull or is at war with him.

why? if anything isn't it more incentive to place spies at key points when you are at war with someone? that doesn't make much sense to me... or are you saying they should retreat their spies in order to defend themselves against your spies when your at war?

I remember reading that the new streamlined tech tree is not even yet implemented. Dont know if there will be new techs or will it be just "streamlined".

Yeah, let's say I start sending all my spies on the Drengin - they should retreat and defend against mine, instead of leaving theirs elsewhere.

Super Spy does seem to work a little, even though you don't get one spy in the beginning but in 4 games I've never had a spy against me.

Remember the part that mentions "The AI hasn't been updated much for this beta"? That would be part of that.

The AI will get better dealing with spies in coming builds. I just barely got it working at all in time for the beta.  Even the cost of spies is still being balanced.

Thanks for your feedback.

spies rock.

what i ment with my post is, the IA was sending his spies to me, than it got involved in a few wars (not with me) and still sended his spies to me.
but like frogboy said, its a work in progress.

oh, one more thing.
i had spies send to the drengin and alterian, both were hostile to me but never declared cause i was so much better.
once i took my spies back they both went back to cool and neutral, like they knew it was me who sended those spies to them
that true?

Perhaps the AI's should when getting spied upon, attack your capitals?

Perhaps trying to spy on a capital shouldn't be 100% successful, more like 50%
