Dear GalCiv II Players:
This is my first post and I really do not know all the etiquettes. I am posting my resolution hoping it may help others and thus have placed the word 'Resolved' in the title. Also, I apologize if this is placed in the wrong area. Very new to this site and the game.
Just this week, I downloaded and attempted to run the Demo of GalCiv II on my Dell 8200 Laptop. Although installation went smoothly and the game started okay, right after I picked how many opponents I wanted to play against, the program crashed back to the desktop with the error in the debug file as 'Could not find a TGN Serial No.'
Simple search on this lead to the fact that my laptops video drivers were probably pretty old (2002) and ought to be updated at least as the first place to start. Gosh, that could have been such a pain since I have a NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go (Dell Mobile). I was being lead to all kinds of crazy places and solutions using Google. Too much for me or maybe I was doing it wrong.
Actually, I found a rather elegant solution which possible others may benefit from. I used the Update Driver from within Windows XP Device Manager and checked a box where it would check Windows Update online for the most current driver. I didn't think anything would happen thinking I probably had to either visit Dell or nVidia's site, but viola, it brought down a driver dated 2004. And sure enough my GalCiv II demo now works just fine on the Dell 8200 Laptop.
Thanks.
Amar
