Newb Observations/Recommendations

Hello All!

GalCiv II is a very intriguing game! Nice job!

Couple observations (maybe these are already in the game, blame it on newb):
1. Galaxy creation is shown in 3D. Playing field of galaxy is a flat plain. - What would be cool is if the playing field was 3D as well. Planets in all three dimensions (more playing space as well).

2. Weapon improvements - I couldn't find a way to add new weapon technologies to exisitng ships. My "army" consisted entirely of Defenders. How about new weapons with the newly completed research and the ability to add the weapons or upgrade ships with the new weapons (I guess this could be done by creating new designs). Would be nice to add the improvements to exisiting ships. Upgrade systems/equipment along with the existing type/class upgrade.

3. When researching the military - Marines tech is achived. Who are the Marines and who are the civilians... Is everyone in the military? How about a choice populating various ships with civilian or military personnel...

4. This may be micromanagement but how about assigning some of your population to a military academy for training. Military population doesn't pay taxes, civilians pay taxes... You have to balance your civilian/military resources as well as deal with the time involved to waiting for miltary to complete training.

5. Another possible micromanagement issue - What is you had to manage food and fuel. When you load up a ship, you need to load enough fuel to reach destination, load enough food to support population loaded onto ship. This would also cause a need for Starports and Fueling stations between long runs.

6. OK, you're in the middle of the game, waiting out turns while your ships meet at rrally point or waiting for that critical piece of technology to be completed... How about an onscreen toggle to complete player determined number of turns. If there is an issue or attack along those turns, play would stop and that turn would play out.

7. I notice that when I attack a planet, my ships have to take out the ships surrounding that planet. There are explosions and I have to check that planets info to see what's leaft in orbit and attack again. Why is there no battle screen showing the ensuing combat such as when a ship on ship attack occurs in space. All I can think of is that the ships are in dock on the alien's planet and not able to repond?

Gotta say, the AI is sweet! I had the AI level turned down and the Altarians still new what I was up to. I was warned that if the AI hadn't been so low they would squash me like a bug.

Anyway, great game, very addictive! These are my thoughts that may be able to contribute in some way to help keep this game growing.

1) Computers might be able to easily make the jump to 3D strategy maps, not quite as much for humans.

Sounds good in theory, but I can't see it being worth anywhere near the hassle.

2) You really have to make your own ships. It's ok, since this is one of the more fun parts of the game, anyway.

Research the weapons techs to get better/smaller/more powerful weapons.

3) Everyone is in the military if you tell them to be.

Really though, don't think of a lot of those techs as giving you new super soldiers or something. It's an abstraction that makes your planetary invasions and defences better.

4) Not a bad idea. I don't think it'd actually add much to the game (there are already enough ways to buff up your defences), but good ideas aer better than no ideas!

5) Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! (Can you tell I don't like this idea?

) This is the distant future - I think we've mastered recycling water and umm, biological matter well enough at this point. Hyperdrive is also really cool and only requires power from the onboard fission reactor - no need for burning hydrocarbons.

6) Might be nice at times when things are quiet. "Do X number of turns unless anything important happens".

7) If the ships in orbit are non-military craft, there's no point showing a one sided battle. Plus it's cruel.

If you must see it though, there's an option in the settings to show all fights.

Yes, that "I know what you're doing but my generals are too dumb to do anything about it" message was hilarious. Glad you're enjoying the game. I live it too, otherwise I wouldn't be here.

As to point 7... I agree... and even with the option checked "on" it doesn't show military vs. military ship fights.

I agree, we need the option to show all miltary combat.

This game rocks. My 9 year old put down his game cube controller once and I don't get to play until he goes to bed.

1. No human would ever be able to navigate it. You wouldn't be able to see the inner-sectors from the outside, and visa versa. It would be like being able to see the air around you.

7. Non-fleet Vs. Non-fleet fights are only shown in the combat viewer if you set the battle type to Full. Fleets Vs. non-fleets are only shown if you uncheck the appropriate interface option.

1. I think the 3D map or even a parallel map would add alot to the game. My first run to a black hole, I didn't know where I was going to end up. Turns out it was just a secttion over in the map I was already on. Wouldn't it be cool if you were sucked into the parallel map, mabye occupied by the races that were not in your first map? Pirates, etc.?

GalCivs would have to guard the black hole to make sure no evil races came through to infect their present galaxy, etc.

3D rotatable universe/playing field would be great. Folks would get used to it. You could color the area with the race colors for clarity...

2. Making your own ships is good. It would be nice to tack on some weaponry to existing ships without the whole ship type upgrade though.

5. If it was so distant future, how come a ship can only reach out so far from an owned planet or starship. There's a flaw in the logic (not yours) there.

7. As mocla points out. There is no animation, even with that option checked. There is a nice animation of some of your unarmed ships being attacked if it comes under fire on it's way to it's destination (I recall).

I am looking forward to bumping up the map size and turning up AI. This game is sweet. Brings me back to the days of plaing Overlord (Supremacy). Sweet game as well. Many good ideas there. You can still find it on abandonware sites. It even plays on my XP based gamer machine (no digital beeping and booping of speaker music now though).

To me, GalCiv 2 has the flavor of M002 with an Overlord overtone. S-w-e-e-t!
