Unlocking additional ship designs

Alright, I'm a ways into my first game, and I'm a little confused. I'm playing the Terrans, and so far the only core ships that I've unlocked (as far as military ships go) are the Defender and the Star Fury. I seem to remember coming across a technology that listed some additional ships, and it said which other techs I needed to research to get those ships, but I can't track it down at the moment. And it seems like to me that I've researched enough to get some additional options. I suppose I could just build my own designs, but I'd rather not invest the time in figuring out the ship builder right now. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

This Link lists the core ships required components. I have been unable to get the Sniper and Missile Boat core ships to appear, the rest seem fine though.

In my opinion it is worth the effort to learn how to build ships. You don't even have to care about ship design. It's easy to choose a ship hull, pick whatever weapons, defenses, sensors, engines etc and just plop them onto open attachment points (the red nodes) on the ship and build better ships than the Core ones (especially after you have better tech). I do not spend hours designing a beautiful ship. I just use a bare ship hull and add components I want to it. Trust me, a custom ship is worth it.

The Sniper and the Missile Boat were the ships I was expecting to pop up as an option by now -- good to hear someone else is missing them, too... And that link definitely helps. Thanks!

I'll give that a shot -- it just drives me nuts when something I come up with looks goofy...

you really should make your own ship a the core ships have no engines. good luck catchig somethign to kill

You don't need to do anything but add the parts that do stuff onto the hull. 95% of what you see on the ships is just parts that are there for looks.

The Sniper and Missle Boat always seem to come up later in the game.

I've noticed the same kind of thing. Ships you design in another game remain available to you in the future. But twice now I've noticed that they don't all come up when they should.
