Online Purchase Question

What is the advantage of getting the boxed version vs. the online purchase? Does the online purchase come with a manual, and, if so or if not, is it really helpful at all (i've heard bad things about it, but i want to confirm).

Also, what is the online purchase download size?

The box gives you, well, a box. If you get the Collectors Edition, you get a nice silver box.

You do get the printed manual as well, and of course a CD with the box.

The CE version also comes with a printed tech tree, but you can find files to print it out yourself if you are so inclined.

The manual could be better, and some things need to be updated as they have been changed since the manual was printed, but it still has lots of good information. You get the manual on PDF with the download.

The download is over 1 gig.

There is no need to have the CD in to play the boxed version. You do need to register your serial number with Stardock to get the patches/updates even for the CD version, though I understand for a small fee stardock can send you a CD with the current patch if you wish.

Many folks have ordered directly from Stardock, and for a little additional postage, are having the box (CE) edition shipped to them. They can download and play right away while they are waiting for the box.

I purchased the Gal Civ I from Stardock back in 2003. While waiting for Galciv II to be released, I decided to play a little but could not find my CD. I was able to log into Stardock and download Galciv I with no problem, 3 years after purchase.

You can archive your DL to a CD if you wish.

Yup i was one of them that ordered online and also ordered the CE box as well. For me it was for different reasons though... I just wanted the nice silver box sitting on my shelf!!

Plus my HD had to be replaced a couple of weeks ago. i found it vastly quicker to use the discs and then use SDC to update to the latest patch.. Saved heaps of time downloading all the sections again.
