New ship designs?

Hey guys, really quick question.. I have played this game for only a few days, but I am going nuts here.

Will I automatically recieve ship designs once I am eligible to build them tech-wise? if so, are these designs sufficient to be able to play the game properly? I've been researching like a madman and I only have the defender ship and the other ship that is almost the same.

I like being able to design myself, but it's not something I enjoy doing personally, so I want to avoid it if I can.

There are core designs for various ship types in the game. However to be honest with you they are very generic and don't usually help you out in a game situation. I don't think I've ever built any of the attack ships you unlock in research. I've always just designed my own taylored to whatever my current needs are in the game.

You know you don't have to place a bunch of jewelry on a ship hull. You can just slap the weapons, defenses, modules and engines you want to any hardpoint and go.

yeah if you are waiting for some great ship to appear in your list just because you researched every tech, it aint gonna happen. just do what the poster above said. pick a hull, weapons, defense and engines and hit the place button. best route to go

I myself obsolete everything (including the stock colonizer and constructor) as soon as they appear -- It's best to use custom ships for everything as they can be molded to fit any situation.

If you decide to try to create a custom ship that looks nice, the designs DO save between games -- What i do is save a copy of the base hull with all the jewlery and then upgrade it when I want to add components.

even faster.. double click on each component and it auto places it.. butt ugly ships, but fastest design.

I may be wrong but...
I was reading the post on the "Galactopedia" it appears that you can see the prerequisits for different core ships.

mayhaps someone can tell us for sure. I'll be downloading it tonight

I think so; specifically on the (research screen) tech tree some entries will indicate that technology is needed plus X (usually listed) others for a specified ship type.

Yeah I have the same problem. Sometimes I don't have time to make these ships. Being a begginer myself (2 days). I have found custom designs that help but I can't figure out how. I think I read it on one of these forum responses.


-The one iThog was looking at I think.
