Installation problem, very bad

A somewhat simple yet horrible problem really. Roughly around the 35-37% installation mark things go haywire and the set-up stops almost competely. I got to stare at the screen for nearly an hour before I finally found out what was happening. I got an error message saying there was an "I/O error" which is apparently caused by corrupted files.

Now I doubt this is a bug I can have fixed, but I want to check to be on the safe side. My guess is I need to go down to my local retailer and exchange the game for another copy in hopes that this was just a bad apple so to speak. Still, if anyone can offer some feedback on the issue either comfirming my thoughts or offering some alternate fix it would be very much appretiated.

If you have a good enough connection, you can simply use the serial that came with the game, get and install StarDock Central from the downloads page here, then register your serial in it and download the entire game (with up-to-date patches included already).

WaterBizkit: I'd say, another possibility is if you have a friend who bought the game, make a copy of his CDs - Since you paid for the game and have a valid Cd-key, I don't think there's anything wrong to getting some backup CDs from someone who also bought the game

At any rate, you might want to go down to the retailer for an exchange. We're just talking what's the quickest way to get you playing

I/O error could be your CD-ROM drive failing.

You might try installing on a different pc and see if that works

The error could also come from a failing hard drive or RAM, depending on how the installer is verifying the files. I've found it fairly rare that the CD is at fault with errors like that.

It's rare, but sometimes the CD is bad. Return the CD if you want an 'official' CD, otherwise do what the others have suggested and download it or burn from a friend since you bought the game and have your own key.

Thanks for the advice folks, quite helpful. The only reason I'd try to put the blame on the CD versus any of the hardware is because this laptop is fairly new and I've never had a single hardware issue with it before. Hell, worst things I've ever encountered is old games (cira the mid-late 90's) either run too fast or not at all, but obviously that's not an issue in this case.

So anyway, i'm doubting it's the hardware. Without throwing the specs up (mainly due to my own laziness in typing them out) suffice to say that I've got a system that'll be able to run Elder Scrolls: Oblivion without blinking an eye, just about. Chances are I'll just go exchange the CD for the hell of it since my retailer has a 10 exchange/return policy. They won't hassle me when it comes to swapping out for another copy of the same game.

Question though: say for some reason it was any number of those hardware issues that have been mentioned, would downloading the game via Stardock Central, as has been suggested, work? Would the game install and run alright then, or would I ptentially suffer the same issue?
