GalCiv: The graphics

Since the betas don't include much of the multimedia for downloading reasons, it's probably useful to tell you what the final game will have in terms of multimedia that you're not seeing in the betas so that you have a better idea of what the overall impact.

Intro:
When you launch the game there is a 3 minute narrative cut scene that gives the back story to the game.

The main menu will have a fully animated backgrond and nicer looking menu panels.

When you start the game there's a 1 minute cut scene showing your star base.

When you first do major things in the game (colonize, build star bases, create a trade route, etc) there is a cut short (3 or 4 second) cut scene that shows what is occurring.

There are lengthy cut scenes for every type of game ending.

There may be cut scenes for some of the random events.

There will be many more planetary surface graphics that are much nicer than the ones we have.

The constructor units will be different per race.

There may be graphic updates to the invasion screen image to show different surfaces and such.

That's the main difference. There will be other graphical enhancements here and there but things like the battles themselves aren't going to be changed.

Excellent! That's exactly what I was looking for, and it sounds terrific.

I would like to make a vote for cut scenes or animated pictures for the random events...actually, I would say the latter more - just some .gif-type animations to go in the window, perhaps?

We want to do that, it's just a matter of 3D artist resources available.

When you see these cut scenes, you'll understand. I am not involved on them directly but I'll say that I think they look movie-quality.

Brad,

Would it be unreasonable to put the cut scenes up in a separate download, like the multimedia download, selectable as another optional download from the DGM so some of us could get them? If they are real big, perhaps many optionals, somewhat like was done on LWN? I guess part of what I am asking is, will GC tolerate there being some of the cut scenes when some of them are missing?

There is a piracy issue we're concerned about. In the FINAL game we'll have more avialable for download but we don't want to take a chance that some leaked pre-final version of the game got out onto the net.

Ah. Good reasoning.

What do you think about the idea that the technology costs are connected to the galaxy size? Small galaxies have maybe 50% of the costs while huge ones have several 100% of the standard costs. The reason behind it is clear. In big galaxies the player has normally a lot more tech centers and he is much faster in climbing up the tech ladder. In smaller galaxies a player does hard to reach some advanced techs. By connecting galaxy size with a procentual techcost-modifier, a player can climb up the ladder in a similar time regardless if he has a small (few planets which contribute to the techs) or large (many planets which contribute to tech advancement) galaxy size. Of course the procentual modifier should be careful calculated out and tested. If would prefer an option at the beginning of the game where a player can choose which techcost modifier he wants to have in his game. (with an preselected and recommended value from the designer)

Ah - cut scenes. Sorry, cut scenes are not my thing. In strategy games they are for me not really necessary. They just bind money and energy which could be better spent on testing and developing some good game rules.

A second question: How customizable is Galciv? Is it similar to SEIV (or CIVII?)

Tech costs are connected to the galaxy size already and have been.

GalCiv is extremely customizeable.

Try it for yourself. You can make your own technologies, ships, improvements, wonders, United Planets events, political parties.
