Why no random races when generating game?

I've been a huge Master of Orion fan (except for that last one) and have put tons of time into all of them, so it was weird that when picking through to generate the galaxy, there was no option for the game to randomly choose races. You select the quantity, then you pick the major races that you're going to play with, removing the surprise of going against a race you haven't gone against yet.

Seems kinda silly to me.

I agree on all accounts - MOO II is the best game ever (or at least shared no.1 with Total Annihilation) and I would like random races.

You look like a Protos, have the breath of a Zerg and my, is that the pointed ears of a Vulcan.

I'm quite happy with the races, though a random race would be a bonus, CAN I BE A DREAD LORD/ARNOR??

The option would be nice, but I wouldn't use it. I prefer to know who I'm up against and what kind of game I'll be playing ahead of time.

Starcraft > MOO1 / MOO2 / Total Annihilation

Definitely! I think I'll have to make a Protoss custom race one day. Goes off to google a picture of a Tassadar.

I would also like to see random alien races; while sometimes I want to setup a specific match, more often I like the mystery of discovering who my neighbors are!

I am wondering if it affects the AI (if the player doesn't know who the races are, does the AI get an automatic benefit of knowing, or do they have to code for that lack of knowledge?)....
