? About Battles

Its my understanding that you do not control combat directly you move your fleet into the coresponding enemy fleet then everything is calculated automaticaly. But I noticed a screen shots that showed alot of other ships fighint it out.

Does the game switch into a computer controlled batlemode when 2 fleets engage eachother?

That's correct: you can watch the battle, but you don't control the ships.

Additionally, you can turn off the fleet battles so that you don't see them, if you don't find them interesting. personally, I found setting the speed to 2x to be a better option than turning them off completely.

ya, and the battle-sequence is only shown if your fleet and the enemy fleet are actually capable of fighting (e.g. if you attack a transport it will be destroyed without showing a battle).
