Why is there no 'zone of control' for fleets, or have I just not progressed far enough along in the tech tree to unlock something of the such? It's frustrating to watch an enemy fleet zip right between two fleets to get to a starbase and take it out. If I'm within one hex of an enemy fleet, he shouldn't be able to fly away without me getting an attack of opportunity on him as he leaves my zone of control. If there isn't one, there would be nice to have techs that unlock & then grow the 'zone of control' your fleets have. Without the star lanes that other games have, it's very hard to position fleets in spots where they can blockade of enemy fleets from getting to far into your zone. Not to mention the number of times I've watched enemy fleets fly through other factions air space.
I am actually surprised that you can just move through an enemy fleet. The hexes are huge, 10s of thousand miles or kilometers across. Our itty bitty space ship that might be 1000 feet long, still could easily slip pass by another fleet in same hex.
Now that I think about it more, in reality, space is like, REALLY big, so you'd never know of other fleets passing each other by. But on the other hand, this is a game, and we suspend reality for a game, so it would be nice to see a zone of control
Real life does not work in turns either... if you can see the enemy far away enough you could always intercept them.
In the game you need to make sure you can see far enough out that they cant spend a turn passing your fleet.
In this specific case you would need to keep the fleet a few hexes away from the station in the direction you anticipate an enemy to come from. This way they could not traverse your field of view in one turn and attack the station without you able to intercept them first.
