The current state of the game

I picked the game up near launch and played it a bit but while I had lots of fun at first I quickly stopped playing it once I realized the problems it suffered from such as mediocre and not very aggressive AI which made the game too easy, and also lack of features. What is the game like now compared to the launch? I know it has had some DLC, does it add a lot to the game? Is the AI better?

How much better is the game now compared to the way it was on launch?

The best way to find out is to try.  There have been definite improvements in AI and added features since launch.  version 1.5 represents 5 full passes of development and balance.  A lot has changed.  Whether it is enough for you is a question only you can answer.

Since you've asked specifically about AI - it is better.  Like you I played a bit in beta and a small amount shortly post launch then put it down until the 1.4 patch.  During 1.4 I put in probably 50 hours and quite enjoyed it.

Fire it up and give it a go, if it's not there yet you can always just put it on the back burner for a few months.

What I really want to know is if the AI actually attacks aggressively now and organizes it's fleet properly. The last time I played it just kept it's fleets small and isolated so they were a joke to fight. There were also times where the AI would go to war with other AI's but no borders would actually change for ages suggesting that even against other AI's the AI did almost nothing.
