No, really. Congratulations are in serious order here. The most recent, exciting thing to happen to the Star Control name was the SC2 code being released into public domain and getting remastered/updated to work on modern PCs.
I have to confess that I haven't played any of your games, and I created an account just to comment on the SC2 franchise. My first SC game was SC1 back on... One of the consoles, can't remember if it was Genesis or NES... Second game was SC3, which I didn't think was too bad, but then I missed out on SC2 due to never having a 3DO.
Then I got my hands on Ur-Quan Masters and found out WHY it was such a big deal. Despite having dated graphics, I'd say that's the game's only flaw. (But I'm fond of indie games anyway, so it wasn't much of a hurdle.) The exploration, the dialogue choices, the ship combat system, (Rock paper scissors-style advantages and disadvantages.) building your "workhorse" precursor vessel into a real Ur-Quan smasher, and the HUMOR! Holy crap, the humor was the icing on the cake! So yeah, I can understand why you'd want to reboot SC2 like how Xcom got rebooted.
And I'm asking you not to.
Yes, I'm sure other fans are surprised by this. I'd actually LOVE to see SC2 remade with modern systems in mind, just wondering what envelopes the game could push and what new experiences and such the game would bring!
But... I'd love to see an SC3 remake even more.
I know what the SC fans reading this are thinking. "But SC3 SUCKED! It took a step back for every step forward that SC2 made!"
And yeah, that's kinda the point. SC3 isn't bad, but compared to SC2, it's obvious that the torch was never passed. Where SC2 had random encounters in hyperspace, SC3 tossed the whole concept out the window and went ENTIRELY with scripted events. Where SC2 had you exploring planets with planet landers and save scumming to keep from losing them and crew (Don't lie. I -KNOW- you did.), SC3 went with colonizing. Where SC2 had Melnorme and Druuge and if you ran out of fuel a Melnorme ship might come bail you out for a price if you had a certain item, SC3 had NO such interactions with the various races and once you ran out of fuel, you were SCREWED. While SC2 had all kinds of interesting artifacts and gizmos that had plot purposes, SC3's Precusor artifacts only let you upgrade alien ships in a certain way. (Yeah, there were a few interesting things that had plot purposes, but they weren't as interesting as the SC2 artifacts, especially after you had your teams analyze them, and ESPECIALLY like Zex's Beast and a certain Syreen artifact...) In SC2, the Sa-Matra acted AND looked like Death incarnate in space while in SC3, it looked like an oversized Ka-Zerza ship.
Worst of all, in SC2, your ship started out as a bare-bones, barely flyable thing that gradually became a mobile death dealer. In SC3, your ship was this unchanging thing that always stayed the same and wasn't all that good in combat. Plus, there was NO MENTION of the saucer-like Vindicator Mark 2 at the end of SC2. That WHOLE CUTSCENE was there as a sequel hook, and the original designers NEVER made use of it, instead going on some tangent with how the universe was breaking down (And explaining away ALL random encounters in space.) and how you needed to fix it.
So while you might want to reboot Star Control starting with SC2, I'm asking you to shelve that for later and instead try to make a worthy sequel instead. I'll probably back either project you take to Kickstarter, but please consider my alternative.
