Are the preset ship templates completely bugged?

So I'm on Dread Lords second mission (Ultimate version of Galciv).

I just got Laser II and unlocked the Star Fury M2 template. Now stats-wise this bird has 2 in beam weapons and that is it. Reach of 0.1, Speed 1 pc and range 0.1 sct.

VISUAL-wise it has ONE Laser I attached (1 beam), 1 sensor and 1 support.

Now this is a complete mismatch, and if I try to build the same vessel I can't fit the support on there as the sensor and Laser I takes 16 space already (10 + 6). I can only make the same vessel if I place a Laser II there, but then I only have 1 in beam weapons.

This is very confusing. Can anyone shed some light on the matter?

It's a bug. The ship auto-designer assumes that you have a level of miniaturisation that you don't actually have.

Thanks. Though miniturization wouldn't explain how Laser I gives 2 in beam attack though.

No way of fixing it with mods then I presume?

Nah, the auto designer is in the executable itself. Has to be, because the AI uses it as well.

Take a close look at the ship details. There are most likely two Laser I installed.

In my opinion the early auto designs are not that bad but once the technologies advance, they fail. I am playing DA campaign in ToA on normal, currently at mission Achilles' heel and to my surprise the auto design properly added the +HP modules. (I still switched to manual designs to apply the attack increase module, though.)

The 2 beam attack might be that it is in orbit. In this case the components are just visual eye candy (just like the two colonization modules), you can remove them from the design and you will notice that neither the stats nor the cost changes.

Well guys I'm not sure.

As you can see, there is only one laser on it (on the top). 1 sensor and 1 support at the bottom.

I can live with it. But it feels like I'm cheating. My tiny hull is actually better than my small hull in the beginning.

Now that I think about it, the auto-designer might not actually show all your components visually, preferring instead to leave your designs relatively uncluttered.

The sensor module and life support module are probably cosmetic if you're not seeing any benefit and they don't actually show up on the ship when it's been built - there's a Details button for ships (not the designs) you can push to see all the ships stats and installed components, taking into account all the bonuses that apply.

It doesn't. I've been using the auto designer in my last games, just to see how it holds up, and the designs don't show all of the components. It looks visually much better, but you can't rely on it to determine what, or how much, is installed.

Thanks guys. I found the details button for the already built ships.

It shows a different story; the ship actually has 2 Laser II on it, and thats it.

I almost hate to admit it, but I have done this on purpose. Instead of creating 5 little lasers, I created 1 very big one for visual effect and hid the rest inside decorative elements. I loved the end visual I got.

So, either I am very silly, or you just found the artistic creativity subroutines. Or both.
