Problems running GalCiv II with windows 7

I love this game. At least I loved it until I could finally afford a good computer. Now I have a nice Dell tower with windows 7 and I can't get GalCiv II to run at all. I get the initial game startup then the screen goes black and nothing happens. No video, nothing just stuck. I have tried some of the basic things administrator setting, trying under different compatability modes as it ran fin under Windows XP previously. Can anyone help with getting this to run? Here is ther error file generated on the last run as I have seen this in several other posts. Nice simple instructions would be good. I am not a novice but I would not want to have to reformat things. Reply to this post please. I would love to get Elemental at some point as I understand it runs on 7 but I really want this one to run first.

It looks like at some point you set the resolution higher than your display supports--go to My Documents\My Games\GC2TwilightArnor, open the file prefs.ini, and make the following changes:

Change
DisplayHeight=1200

To
DisplayHeight=1080

Then save the file and you should be able to start the game.

There isn't a multiplayer option for GalCiv2. There's a sort of high score list that's called the Metaverse, where you can start games and then submit the final score once you're done. The Metaverse checks the end game for cheat flags and if none are tripped, the score gets added to your profile.

We had tournaments once upon a time, started by a player named Wyndstar (here's one of his tournament threads https://forums.galciv2.com/151611 ).

The idea evolved into the "Metaverse League", which was the brainchild of a player named Ghostwes. Here's a post about it: https://forums.galciv2.com/157225

Both tournaments used the Metaverse to check and verify score and the saved games could be checked by referees if there was a question. Games would also count toward team scores when the players were members of an "Empire". That was in the heyday of GalCiv2 though. Now, there are only a few active empires left. You can find them in the "Metaverse" forum... https://forums.galciv2.com/forum/345 .

In order to submit your score to the Metaverse, you need to create a Metaverse character and start a game in Metaverse mode. You can then play it, save and reload, etc and when the game ends, you'll be given an option to submit the game's score.

If you reload the same game, you can try for a higher score once and only once. You can then submit that as the score for that game. I'm not sure what would happen if you try a second time, but I've been let to understand that it won't work and the time you took to play the game is lost at that point.

I haven't played a game in quite some time. I'm not really sure if the Metaverse is still online, but there's no reason that I can think of for it to have been shut down.

I was having problems installing it on my Dell 8GB multi-screen system. It didn't want to install. I turned off my two extra screens and it completed the install.

After I had it up and running I discovered that it didn't matter if I left the other two monitors turned on - it was only during the installation process that I had to have them switched off.
