Mod/cheat to see whole map WITHOUT exploring?

Is there anyway to just see the whole map at start? I HATE exploring and the AI obviously can see habitable planets without exploring at the higher levels. GalCiv I had it right with being able to see habitable planets in the mini map with stellar cartography..

According to the wiki, if you start the game from a shortcut containing the keyword "cheat", then hitting control-U will remove the fog.

Search for the race config files. If you start a new game and set sensors ability as 100 than you see the whole map.

Sensors have a hard cap (game engine) at 15.  There may be maps where that won't quite show you the whole thing.

But it's a nice idea.

Kids these days!  Back when I was learning the game, if you wanted to see

the whole map, you had to play it for a while, then take a screen shot, then

restart a saved game from very early, and then use your screen shot as a map,

just like you'd use a paper map in your car on a long trip.

 

Now everybody wants some kind of built-in cheat so they don't have to work

or think.   What's the fun of that?

Trying to switch back and forth between maps is annoying. I name my file QuickScout. I start a game and then after 10-20 rounds I'll switch research to sensors and life support then space ships equally at the edge of the map and just run them in lines across to the other edge of the map using cargo hulls loaded with sensors and support modules. I use a pen and paper and note the locations of all the starbase resources

Publius of NV, thank you very much, just what I needed!

And thanks to all that replied. I didn't really expect to get an answer for this "old" game so really pleased to see the quick responses. Seems there is life in the 'old girl' yet !

 

As for the " ..in my day" response..

Exploring at lower AI levels is fine. AI can only "see" as well as you, but at the highest levels they get a direct shot at the closest planets with no need to explore so the maps are virtually unplayable. Now I can have challenging games with a chance to win. ')

That's part of the challenge

 

The AI is lacking though. I haven't lost a game in ages

There are far easier ways to cheat if that's the objective you know....

Stuff like memory and/or savegame editors.

AlBarr, glad I could help.  Back when I was a beta tester for GC2 DL, I was using cheat codes all the time to help me find bugs.  So I well remembered the control-U combination.  But I had to go to the wiki because I'd forgotten how they turned off cheats after the beta.
