I sent this to Stardock over a year ago. I didn't get an answer but i wasn't expecting one. It's just a personal reflection and i thought it would be interesting to make it a open letter in the forums.
I will just add that since Valve launched steam for mac i've already purchased something like 10 of their games. All available in Steamplay (windows+mac). IN the meanwhile i've played galactic civ maybe twice in the hollidays and sins of a solar empire not even once. I never had time to move beyond the tutorial and since the few times i went back were so spaced apart i had to run the tutorial again. Stardock is just leaving a possible profitable market aside for others to explore.
Hello.
I've bought galciv ii - ultimate edition and sins of a solar empire and simply love your games. i''ve been a big fan of galciv and find it a great great game. So, stating that i simply love your games, let''s move on to the purpose of this email.
i'm a mac user. I use macs for my academic phd research, work and personal live. i will not state my personal preferences for it or it''s qualities/defects but i would like to state my point for this contact. I love your games but i keep reducing their use continuously since i have to reboot and stop/save all my apps and works to do a quick game for a break or a relax time.
As you can guess that is not feasible neither pleasant. i do research and work on my mac, i have always open tons of scientific articles, matlab and the all remaining "phd gizmos".
Now, you''ve probably have better data than i have on what''s the current market share of macs between young people age 15 to 35 or something, that effectly play games and buy them. it's already a significant part and not totally irrelevant.
I'll not ask for a mac-only version from your products but what i would like to ask/suggest is for your programs to be developed In OpenGL instead of DirectX. i mean, in galciv at least, the focus and main advantage of your game is the superb AI, not the graphics. By doing your graphic work in OpenGL you could easily port it for mac/*nix platforms and allow us avid gamers and stardock fans the joy of buying and playing your games in a quick moment of relax without forcing us to interrupt our work and personal activities.
Now, i will not state this a fan "threat" but simply as a reflection statement. Whithout a Mac version of your products, they are nowhere in my purchasing list in the foreseeable future. i''m done buying windows games. it makes no sense for me and as such i will only buy mac software. not any philosophical or "geek ideological" reason, just pragmatism. there are ports of other games. there are publishers that always launch simultaneously mac and windows versions of their products (see blizzard). i''m sure that you can do as good or better job and simultaneously achieve and have a chance with the mac market share. If not, then simply is a signiicant revenue that becomes available for other companies. Like i said, i''ve loved your games untill now. i would really like to keep playing them. i believe (whithout being an expert in gaming programing) that OpenGL can provide you with similar or equivalent features and speed while at the same time it provides you with an easy port for other OS and other avid players. Please think about it.
sincerely,
philip
