A couple years ago, we put in a solar panel for our hot water heater and cut our power bill down a third (we live in Florida -- I don't know how much that would work for someone who didn't live where there's oodles of sunshine).

Now we're working on the water -- just had my hubby convert our toilets to dual-flush systems.  According to the advertising, we can cut our water consumption 15,000 gallons per year for a family of 4.  I really don't know if it will work, but it's cool to have 2 buttons to push.

Trying to consume less electricity is just another phrase for GODLESS COMMUNISM.

Next you'll be rounding up all the minorities for the camps.

Capitalism is powerful because the government can create economic incentives to make the populace do just about anything. And we only need to conserve power until 2060 or so. That is when the whole fusion power thing kicks in and we just don't have to care anymore.

We need to save the rainforest to protect oxygen-breathers like people.
If we can't save the rainforest, we should protect the algae, which produce most of the oxygen.
To protect the algae, we should eliminate their predators.

I like those ideas. With proper solar panels you could maybe generate enough power to be self sufficient and even 'sell' some back to the power consortium.

The sytems we have in Oz do just that.

Even the planning act re heritage overlays is being amended so 'appearance' issues that arise where people will be 'defacing' the streetscape because the only roof orientation to North is on their frontage will be allowed.

'quaint' Victorian Architecture with ugly solar panels on the roof.... makes a mockery of 'heritage'....

Might be one for the materials engineers in the longer run. Photovoltaic paint and that sort of thing.

Must be nice to live somewhere with an architectural tradition to preserve (or mourn passing). I'm Floridian. Even though we have neat things like a few cracker houses still around from the old days and some half-decent modernism from the Sarasota School, it's mostly McUgly sprawl and 'town centers' that fell off a few trucks.
