Thats an improvement...see how different blend modes enhance the grain rather than hazing it over.And being able to see the top stroke adds definition.
Use screen when you need a stronger glare.
I knew you didnt want that shiny but it was the easy way to show 2 bevels...1 large overlay hilite to put a smaller screen blend glare on.
What I didnt show in the picture was the radial gradient just to keep the broad surface areas from being too flat and even...that adds a little more interest and life.
If you then get real fancy you can add some surface ridges that follow the grain...where the finish soaks deeper in...heheheheheh 
Dont forget...any raised or recessed surface that is on the wood now needs the same techniques applied.Like your text background...cant use screen for the edge bevel there if you no longer used it for the frame.
