Confused about trade goods

Can anyone explain trade goods to me? This isn't discussed in detail in the manual at all. I know that they have to be built like improvements on a planet, but what do they do for me after I get one? Also, how do I know the path to take that will end in me getting a trade good?

For instance, if I start a game as the Terrans, how do I know what research to follow to get to a trade good? Also, how many are there? Can all races get all of them?

Trade goods bestow certain benefits upon your civilization (i.e., increase miniturization for your ships, increase your ships hps, etc).

You can offer these trade goods to other civilizations. If they accept, they gain these benefits as well.

I think you can find the them on the tech tree, depending on what version of the game you are playing (ToA, I think).

Right-click on the technology to see what it gives you.

I'm not sure about how it works in TA, but google and the Wiki are your friends. Just google: galactic civilization trade goods. It'll take you to the list of them.

Be advised that the gravity accelerators are broken in that one cannot gain the bonus through a trade. That is, one can trade for it, but one does not get the +1 speed bonus.

Thanks guys... man, I wish we had an in-game civilopedia type thing like in CivIV. I know we've got the galactopedia but that's an external thing.

Also to note, a Trade Good cannot be effectively lost. If the planet you built the building on is conquered, you still have the benefit of the trade good, as well as does the race that took the planet. If you take the planet back, they still have the trade good. So the 2 things the building itself does is 1) get the trade good into play 2) the holder of the building can sell the trade good to a race that doesn't have it yet.
