Did someone mention boobytrapped items? As in, possibly cursed-might-even-go-boom-if-you-take-it-from-the-owner?
Figure this; Artifacts are not destroyable. Let me take this opportunity to seperate between artifacts (essentially very rare) and average items (low-quality magic items and the like). Someone dies, the killer gets a chance to pick up the items, send it to another hero - the works.
But here we can have an entire array of enchantment magics. Adding "attributes" to an item. It may be Soulbound to the wearer, rendering it useless to anyone except the one it's bound to. It may be cursed if the original wearer is killed, permanently attaching itself to whomever wears it (doesn't even necessitate the original wearer being killed - it might be a concious choice). It might even be booby-trapped, set to inflict a horrible disease, poison the antagonist that stole it, or explode in a ball of fire.
This, in turn, would allow for another array of magics, such as Identify (to identify an enchantment, curse, booby-trap or soulbinding), a Disenchantment spell to remove Soulbinding or re-apply it, a Decurse spell, etc.
Just popped into my head during the discussion.
