I won this game due to luck more than anything else.  I started in the upper left side of the map with the scotlingas, snathi, and lentzlandians nearby.  The thalans were to the left of me with the torians on the far left.  The drengin were in the center and earth was on the opposite side of the map from me.  At the start of the game the thalans were attacked by the torian confederation.  I gave the thalan empire some money to keep the war out of my territory.  For a while the torians were officially at war with me but neither of us actually attacked each other.  I did swallow up the three minor races in my vicinity, however.  Soon the altarians attacked me and I conquered their home system, taking the social matrix. Meanwhile, the thalan empire surrendered to the terran alliance.  I was mainly able to defeat the altarians because of an economic boom that allowed me to slide production up to 100%.  Oh, and I got an arnorian ranger.  Then the jagged knife (led by a scottlingas, ironically) took over a bunch of planets but I took mine back easily.  Than I proceeded to grab every jagged knife planet I could.  The peacekeepers appeared but they left my ships alone for some reason.  I used the opportunity to build only transports (Ididn't know exactly how spore ships worked at the time) and went around capturing every planet the peacekeepers left defenseless.  Things were looking good until I declared war on the torian confederation, causing the peacekeepers to declare war on me....
