couple more questions....

help! :)

ok well again, just got back into galciv2 and really starting to appreciate it. A couple things are the source of some consternation however.


Sometimes....for whatever reason...my fleets don't auto-pilot! I have to "hand-fly" them across the galaxy. Thank god I'm taking my reinitiation with the game slow and am playing a medium map. They'll (the ships) start out with a movement of (for example) 3/0 instead of 3/3 and then the process of manually moving them begins.

Secondly I have a econ question i haven't found the answer too. Some of my planets are having a negative income because my "spending" is too high. I haven't been able to determine what causes "spending" however. This is definately something i'm going to have to nail down before I attempt a higher difficulty level.

The movement flaw is in the most recent update of the game. There is a thread floating around, look for Pathfinding error fix.  
There is a download on the post that fixes the problem.
Believe me, it fixes the problem.

Spending (economy) is a base function of your Colony and any planetary improvements you build. Each factory requires so many BC per turn in maintenance as does each Lab, etc. When you actually use the factory, lab, etc, that generates additional costs per turn equal to the output.

Keeping a balance between spending and income can be a beast. My rule of thumb is to research the next higher banking technology and upgrade my econ buildings before I research and upgrade my factories and labs.

how do you balance that with specialized worlds? do you just accept that ship construction and research planets are a drain that need to be balanced against econ worlds?

Short answer: yes. The number of heavy production/research planets you can operate is directly related to how many mony-making planets you have and how productive each is.

follow-up question:

How you do balance the rising cost of your infrastructure with the need to land-grab in the early stages of the game? I end up with -100+ easy for the longest because my population takes forever to get up to snuff on the econ worlds. Then my social spending goes to pot.

If I take it nice and slow however, i'm certain the computer opponents will land-grab me into insignificance.

There isn't anything that speaks to these certain issue's (that i've found) on the wiki.

It's highly counterintuitive, but LOWER taxes at the beginning, preferrably to the point that a planet under ~2b people will have 100% morale. This will increase your population much faster, and your tax base will expand with it. Avoid buying anything at all if possible, building is cheaper.
